We aren't meant to be the top of entertainment.  We're a pregnancy board turned baby board.  We're going to gripe about MILs, compare notes on solids, and rehash topics on parenting.  For one thing, there are people around who weren't around during pregnancy who don't necessarily want to dig up the old threads.  For another, some of us are actually curious about each other and how we're handling certain difficulties we're all going through with young babies.  If those kind of threads aren't enough for you, you're in the wrong place.

I applaud the intent of this thread.  I'm all for seeing why people make the choices they do in parenting because it gives me an other perspective to compare to what I'm doing.  I figured it was going to turn into a flame-fest one way or another, but not everyone here got to voice their opinions when the first thread about this went up during pregnancy.

The problem with "I'll choose for my kid, you choose for yours" is that we can't choose to do our own parenting by never letting our kiddos hang out with you or your kiddos, because you don't broadcast the fact that your family is a walking bio-hazard zone to everyone you interact with on a daily basis.  That darling 7 week old COULDN'T be vaccinated.  He got sick when he was 3 weeks old.  And he got sick from some stranger who decided that his life was not as important as their "freedom" to choose to not get vaccinated.  I am not sure I could live with myself if I discovered I had killed a baby by making the decision not to vaccinate myself or my kiddos--but hey, if you can, then I guess you will continue to just rock on with life. 

But don't kid yourself that this is a personal decision that you alone should have the power to make, unless you do live on an island with only your family and choose to NEVER interact with the rest of the world.  If you live in a society, you have to make certain sacrifices for the good of the society as a whole.  Vaccinating healthy people to both ensure that they don't get sick in the future and to give herd immunity to the chronically ill and babies who are too young to be vaccinated is the price you should have to pay to live in modern society.

ALSO--whoever said that chicken pox vaccine could raise the risk of adult shingles is just ABSOLUTELY incorrect!!  I had chicken pox as a child and then got shingles as a teenager and it nearly ruined my senior year of high school.  Stabbing, intense nerve pain for WEEKS on end so bad that you can't wear clothes and can't sleep is nothing to joke around about.  Shingles killed my grandfather.  You absolutely, without a doubt, cannot get shingles from the chicken pox vaccine.  You can only get shingles if you have actually had the chicken pox illness.  Even if I had to get my kid boosters every single year, instead of a booster every 10 years like they are now recommending, I will NEVER knowingly allow that horrible virus to enter her body.  The chicken pox themselves were not horrible--made for a miserable week back in kindergarten, but then they were over.  But shingles comes on with a vengeance, and can attack the nerves again and again, causing permanent damage.  Not something to screw around with.
