Cloth Diapering

Another PreFold question - re: Snappis

First of all, thanks for everyone's advice below, helped me understand preferences one way or another!!

Second, What is the deal with Snappis.  Another thing that seems like you "have" to use when they're younger, but maybe not so much when they're older?

the Snappis thing definitely confuses me as to When and Why do I need to use them?

Thanks again!

Re: Another PreFold question - re: Snappis

  • Well snappis secure the diaper closed - so they are a modern alternative to pins.  I never liked trifolding a PF and laying it in a cover so for us, snappis were always needed.

You use them where people used to use pins. They are T shaped and stretchy and grab the fabric from each side of the waist and then pull fabric up in the middle. IMO, they help contain NB poo the best. I have 3 we rotate through.

  • They keep the diaper tighter than pins imo and hold messes better like pp said.  I use a snappi when he has a cover on (if I can find one).  They are not good for going coverless at home.  It can snag and/or scratch baby.  They are faster and nice to have but not a necessity.
  • Ditto to everything the previous posters said. There is also a newer(?) type of fastener called "boingos" that hook into the fabric like snappis, but you use one on each side rather than the way the snappi stretches across the front of the diaper. Supposed to be easier? I was swayed by the bright colors and the cute stars on them - they've apparently just launched a newer version and so the older version is on clearance at various online sellers. We used snappis with my son's diapers but I ordered a few boingos to try out.

*Tried to put in a link; the boingo site seems to be down right now. The site shows how to use them and tells where you can buy them. You can google it, though. Also, anyone who has used those and has feedback, I'd be really interested to know more about them (but if they're awful, it's too late, I already bought some). *

  • I actually am not thrilled with snappis. They come undone, get caught on my shirt or in my hair, and I sliced my finger open on its teeth last week. We have yet to keep poo from getting on the cover whether we use them or not (DS only poops every few days so theres a LOT) so I only use them to secure the dipe when we are going coverless. I usually jelly roll the prefold and hold the sides together while I snap the cover over it. It's not any more difficult than the snappi and the cover is tight enough to keep the pf in place.
  • I'm pretty sure the difference for an older vs. younger baby is all in the poop. When they're little, you want to fold the diaper around them because their poop is so runny and they do it so often that you really want to make sure you don't get it all over the cover. When they're older, it's more solid and they don't poop as often, so you don't necessarily have to wrap the diaper around the baby really snuggly.

Snappis kind of confused me too until I actually got mine in the mail and starting using it. I encourage you to get one. They're great.

  • I still use a snappi.  I think it helps the diaper be more trim on him underneath his cover.  DH always trifolded the prefold, but it was NBD to me, so I didn't correct him.  It does help contain the poo during the newborn stage, but the poop is so runny that there's almost no stopping it from getting on the cover.
