Breastfeeding

Poo looks like seaweed

Most of my son's stools look like the normal seedy texture you'd expect from a breast fed baby. However, more increasingly, I'm getting green poopey diapers that look like they have seaweed in them. Very stringy, slimy, and plant-like in texture and shape. It seems very odd to me- is this a sign of an allergy or other problem? LO seems to be feeling OK and is eating and gaining well.

My son did this but never was upset/sick when he did. I gave up dairy and soy and it made no difference. I would not be concerned unless he seems like his tummy hurts or has other symptoms.

I called my pedi just now (d/t earlier post) b/c dd has the same thing. The nurse there said i didn't have to worry, just keep an eye on her in case she stops nursing well. She said the main thing was to make sure she had plenty to drink.

I am, however, still hella curious as to why this happens.

  • That's how DD2's poop looked before I cut dairy and soy from my diet. She always nursed and gained weight well though. But she was very fussy and gassy. Her poop went back to normal after I'd been off dairy and soy for 4-5 wks. Her diapers also sometimes had tiny specks of blood in it. The pedi tested a diaper for blood and it was positive even though there wasn't any visible blood in that particular diaper. Once her stools were normal again, we tested another diaper and it was free of blood. You could ask your pedi to test a diaper and see if there are traces of blood in it. If so, I'd cut dairy and soy from your diet.

  • I've been dairy, soy and wheat-free for 4 months and my son's ate still like that. He does it immediately after nursing and has gas with it..I have been wondering if it's an imbalance of foremilk/hindmilk. My son hasn't had a seedy diaper in months. :/
