Actually you can, and people do. I spent time in Africa and they would sell mangos on carts and you would just eat them like an apple. They were slightly smaller than what we see in the states so were either picked earlier or a different variety. I did learn that often people who are allergic to mango are allergic to the skin, and some people did get slight rashes around their mouths when eating them that way.
