What to do, what to do....your thoughts please? A little long.

We currently pay $600 a month for DS to go to daycare 3 days a week.  He loves the place and we like them a lot too.  However, because they wont take DD until she is 6 months old, I have been working evenings so I am with her during the day and DH is with the kids at night.  While I miss having dinner with my family and the whole bedtime routine, I rather love being with my kids during the day.

So, DH mentioned in passing that since I am home anyway, maybe we should take DS out of daycare altogether and save $600 a month.  Now, we could really really use the money but I worry that we would be doing DS a disservice.  While he does have fun while he is there, he does put up a fight to go because he wants to stay home with mommy and baby.  I really love having him here so that part of it is easy.  I am just concerned with taking away the structure he has and the learning environment.

Once DD is 6 months old, my job expects me to return full-time.  At this point, I am either going to negotiate a 2nd shift schedule so I can continue to be with my kids or find another job and hope for a 2nd shift option.  If none of these will happen, then I will go in to a day shift and both kids will go into daycare - however the chances of getting a 2nd shift are pretty high.

Thanks for reading....would you take DS out of daycare to save $600?

  • I would, but we are not in the best financial situation. The only thing I would worry about is if your day care will have his spot if you.need to go back to work during the day.

  • If you take him out you could always sign him up for some fun classes a few times a week. That way you would still save hundreds and he would still get educational and social time.
