XP on BF board: Popping on and off breast

I posted this over there to see if I could get any advice, but I also wanted to ask some of you all to see if any of you have had this issue:

My 3 month old just started doing this yesterday and I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on.  I've looked on KellyMom about "distracted" nursing, but I don't think that's it...he does something very specific: He sucks for about 5 sucks, then unlatches, turns his head to the other side, then turns his head back and starts trying to latch back on...he does this over and over.  I try burping him, changing him then putting him back on, putting a blanket over my shoulder and his head just in case it is distraction, suctioning his nose in case he's stuffy and can't breathe ( but it doesn't sound like he is and nothing comes out)...I'm running out of ideas.  He's fighting sleep SO hard, so the only thing I can think of is that he doesn't want to sleep, and being on the boob makes him sleepy?  Also, I thought maybe he was full and wanted to suck, but just didn't want milk, so I put a pacifier in his mouth when he unlatched one time, and he just stared at me and smiled with the pacifier in his mouth, and didn't suck...LOL.  Does anyone have ANY ideas what could be his issue?

I'm seriously wondering if it's teething...he seems to have the other signs too...oh boy.

  • DS does the same thing. But he will look up at me and smile a lot of the time, like it may be a game to him. I'm not really sure though. I kinda think he may be at the start of teething also so that could be part of it as well, I'm not sure.

  • my DD does this a lot too, I am always worried it means that she doesn't like the taste of the milk when it happens.  I don't know if thats what it is, but I always worry about everything I eat.

  • My dd has been doing this as well and a lot lately.  I feel like she's becomin even more interactive and distractive and fighting sleep.  She had a growth spurt at the beginning of this week and it was worse then.

  • My LO has been doing this too. I think he is playing. He doesn't cry when I put the boob away so it's the only thing I can think of.

  • I'm glad you posted this because my DD has been doing the same thing for the past couple of days, except she seems upset when it happens.  She latches on, sucks for a bit, unlatches, gets mad, latches back on, repeat.  Sometimes I'll get a burp out of her and she'll be ok, but it seems like all of our nursing sessions are like this now.    I don't know if I'm misreading her cues and she's not hungry or if its something else like teething.

  • My LO pulls off when he is fighting sleep. I usually take him off a couple minutes then try again.

    Sounds just like mine.

  • Probably playing. DS does this all the time except he cracks up laughing while he's doing it.  It's frustrating but oh so adorable!

  • I've been going through this too!  He latches, then will unlatch, look up at me, and get a huge smile and this flirty look.  I LOVE that look, but it gets super frustrating!  He was a bear today and only took about a 20 minute nap all day.  He's been taking a bottle just fine though.  I was thinking it probably had to do with a growth spurt, but I hate just chalking every bad day up to that.

DD does this too lately, she lets go and pulls her head back, then leans forward and opens her mouth again. It is really annoying!

Madison is doing something like this, as well.  She will try and relatch herself like she is starving even though she pulled off.  It's usually 1 of 3 things, she's either gassy/pooping, tired or my flow is too slow at that time.  I usually taker her off to burp her and she takes care of whichever of the 3 issues it is.  Good luck!

This! I tell her to stop playing boobie games and eat. It's very silly, and I will take her away from the breast and play with her a bit, then try again.

Sometimes she does this and fusses, and then it's usually gas or she's working on a poop.

  • First: Chelsey, your siggie pic is SO CUTE. He's adorable!

DS does this a lot as well, and it's not the same as when he's just playing with the boob. I always wonder if it's bad taste, slow flow, overtired, not really hungry, etc etc. I have no idea. The other day I popped a paci in and he seemed much happier, so that time I think he just wanted to suck but didn't want milk. But that's not the case every time. It's annoying but probably nothing to worry about!
