heat index-LO swimming?

in laws are watching DD tomorrow and asked that I bring her little kiddie pool but the high is like 94 and heat index between 100-105. I am thinking it will be too hot to be outside. I dont even want to bring her stroller for a walk. WDYT? should I bring her pool and stroller

Re: heat index-LO swimming?

  • I live in the same state you do! I've had LO outside. She loves it and leaving her in the house would send us out of my mind.

I sunscreen her up...throw her in the pool. It's been fine. I just watch that she's not looking too hot or tired, make sure she gets plenty to drink etc. I just set the pool under a smaller tree for shade.

Our sandbox is also really cool and under 2 big old trees so we head there too.

We also live on a farm so I have work to do and she has no choice about the outside. I give her frozen teething rings and a cold squeeze food pack and we go to it.

So basically she's not outside as much as usual, but I don't think a little outside is going to do any harm...esp. in a pool.

  • It's been HOT in CO this summer too.  I usually try to get out early (before noon) or we play outside at dinner time while DH grills.

  • Its almost a requirement to get outside for us as both kids get cranky if they don't get some fresh air each day.  So despite the high heat indices the last two weeks we have been outside.  The first week both kids were in swim lessons, the second it was just DD and DS and I sat in the shade and watched.  We are already planning outside activities for this week.  When its super hot like that I try to keep them in the pool, or at least the shade, as it really does make a difference.

  • We have taken Gavin out swimming. Also load him up with sunscreen and a hat. Only go out for an hour or so at a time. So far so good and it's been in the 100's for quite some time now.

To add to my pp, I will say I really only feel most comfortable with my DS being outside/swimming when my DH or I am with him. I can relate to not necessarily wanting someone else to be having your daughter outside.

I do the work they get to sit and relax and catch a breeze . And your inlays raised your husband I'm sure they will be just fine with lo keep in mind I sound like a hypocrite because I never wanted mil to watch Tim until I had nick but I she also didnt know him and had high needs as newborn  anyway rambling now

  • We still put LO in the pool; just with lots of sunscreen and water!

  • I don't see the problem with letting her outside, especially if its in the pool and in the shade!  I probably would limit the amount of time out there, but go for it :-)

Make sure they have a sippy or bottle with water to keep her hydrated.

  • We are outside every single day no matter what the weather. From snow to rain to heat. Just dress appropriately. I think that the pool is actually a great idea for the hot days. As everyone mentioned, just make sure she is hydrated and sun screened.

  • Put the kiddie pool in the shade and it will be a nice way to cool off. It's been in the mid 100s here. I've been joining DD in the kiddie pool. If it's cool enough for my third trimester self, it's fine for her.

I have to agree with this. I am not usually a worrier, but DD HATES to be hot, and she gets really upset and cranky if she is too hot, and it would probably concern me a bit if DH or I were not the ones to have her out (though we personally would have her in the pool for sure.)  Just make sure they understand the importance of hydration, sunscreen, and moderation.
