Strep throat. Has anyone had it?

This is the 1st time I've had it, so I don't know if this is normal, but I'm starting to get concerned the anitibiotics  aren't working.  I started them on Saturday, but I still have a sore throat & mild fever.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't want to call the Doctor if symptoms normally last this long.

You've never had strep before?!  You must be one healthy person!  I have had it a few time.  I surprised you are still feeeling ill.  Usually a couple days of antibiotics does the trick for me.  I hope you feel better!

Oh, thanks!  I hope so, too!  I've had Mono before ("Best diet ever!"), but I've never had Strep.  It's actually been a couple years since I've been on any anitbiotics.

Also, in case anyone missed the joke, the quote about Mono is from Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. Smile

Oh lord I get strep very often.  In fact had it 3 times before April this year so was planning to get my tonsils out then found out we were pregnant!  Anyway strep stinks and its pretty hard to get rid of sometimes so it depends on what type of antibiotics they gave you.  Amoxicillin takes longer for me to get relief from symptoms but seems like it keeps it from having repeat infections better.  A Z-pack gets rid of symptoms quickly but I had a Z-pack with 2 of my strep incidents this year and about 3 weeks or so later I'd have strep again so don't think it was really effective at killing it.  Good luck girl!  Maybe call the doctor again if you are still having fever though---that at least should go away I would think but strep tends to leave you feeling exhausted.  Ugh it sucks.

I've only had strep once and that was like 8 years ago. I got the antibiotics on Friday, felt like death all weekend and then was better on Monday. Not healthy, but felt better. I would call your dr.

I get strep fairly often (twice this season) and I think a Z-pack is the way to go IMO. Amoxicillin is like candy to me and doesn't work any more because I took it so often as a child. The fever really should be gone by now. I would give your doctor a call. Feel better!

I've never had strep, but my daughter did and her fever/sore throat went on for 4-5 days after starting antibiotics, so I called and they checked and they had to put her on new ones.  Just wasn't working.  When we originally went, the Dr. said 2-3 days and she should feel a lot better.

I'd wait another day, maybe. Sometimes it CAN take longer. If you still don't feel any better tomorrow, I might call.

I was a consistent strep case as a child...usually had it multiple times/year.  This was during the big push for "keeping tonsils" so, even though my mother pushed, I didn't have them taken out.

I developed a NASTY case (black tonsils, brown spots) while overseas during my sophomore year of college and went through 2 complete rounds of antibiotics.  It immediately came back each time.

I INSISTED on a referral to a specialist and he took one look and said they needed to come out.  He later determined I had "chronic cryptic" tonsils.  Basically, I had had so many "tonsil infections", strep or not, that I had developed deep scarred crevices where the infection would just sit and manifest.

Hopefully, none of this will apply to you since it's your first time.  I do remember as a child feeling MUCH better in 1-2 days when on antibiotics.  I would call your Dr. and let him know you're not feeling better.  A new antibiotic may be needed.
