LOs and Summertime

With summer upon us that means cookouts, 4th of July, etc.  I know here, it's been a scorching summer with temps between 95 and 100 for the remainder of the seven day forecast.  We have 2 cookouts this week and DH and I have already discussed that we won't be staying long, but help me brainstorm things I need to know or remember when it comes to taking our 3 week old out this summer!

Re: LOs and Summertime

  • I wish I could help you. Today will be our "scorcher" for the week - the high is supposed to be 72. Yesterday we were in jeans & sweatshirts, with cold rain. I wish we'd have a summer!

  • i'll be watching this post to see what other moms say, as i'm curious too lol especially since LO can't use sunscreen or anything yet.

we have an outdoor communion party to go to on saturday, i'm thinking of wearing her in the moby, so i can nurse without having to get covered up, and keep her out of sun that way too.

yesterday it was really cool here, had her in a fleece onesie, but this week supposed to hit 90s.

  • Don't have her out too long at a time! Wear a rimmed hat if possible and light clothing!

  • I'm in Texas, and we'll probably be above 100 degrees everyday for the rest of the summer :(  I'm thinking we'll be inside for the next 3 months unless it cools down some in the evening.
  • A couple of things I learned in a recent heat wave with lo. It was just a drive to the store.

Put the ac on in car BEFORE LO gets in.

Dress LO in layers. In the car ds needed a blanket. Outside he needed onesie.

I changed LO in the car bc there wasn't any other place to do it. On a normal day it is fine but not when there's a heat wave. Plus seatbelts get very hot in car.

His pedi said to use sunscreen. It's debatable. If using sunscreen don't forget the soles of feet.

Get shades for backseat of car. The glare from sun is hot.

Be careful of cars seats and carriers. Ds would sweat in both.

have some type of bug cover for stroller. Pedi said no bug repellant for LO.

Dont allow people to hold baby without washing hands. My ds is sick and wish I enforced this.

I'm planning a zoo trip right now, so I've been digging up some research.

    1. We will only be there for 2hrs (1.5 if it's scorching hot)

    2. Floppy rimmed hat to keep sun out of eyes and off of head and shoulders (bucket fishermans hat- Gap Baby...so cute!)

    3. water babies sunblock ( I know it's a huge debate on if a 3 month old should use it. I know it's better than sun screen and a lot better than sun burn, so judge if you will, but that's my opinion)

    3. portable bottle cooler ( with extra than what we will need-avoid dehydration)

    4. an umbrella

    5. dress lightly, but bring an extra warmer outfit . you never know how weather changes.

    6. extra wash cloth that can be wet down with cool water to wipe on LO face and neck if I think he needs it.

There's a bunch of other little details, but this is the main plan I'm devising. Hope this helps.

  • DD was four months her first summer.  Doc said to use sun block not sun screen,  she recommended  california babies and to only put it on exposed areas.  I used shirts with SPF to cover other areas.  I took her out before 10 and after 4 otherwise I avoided the sun all together.  DS is only two weeks old so he won't be outside much this summer.  For the 4th we are going to just have our family over that way we can stay in the house than my mom and I will walk to the fireworks with DD.  What I learned with DD is until they are toddlers summer activities change.  If you are going to have the baby outside remember it is much hotter in a stroller or carseat than it is sitting in a chair.  I went to a party once where a mom ended up in tears because her DD was in a stroller with a bug net mom was in the pool and did not realize how hot her DD had gotten.
