My DS is taking FOREVER to fall asleep lately. He seems content but he continuously pulls himself up in the crib and seems to hang out(looking over the railing or hanging out sitting). After awhile he will get sloppy and fall on his bum but will pull himself up over and over. He did this for at least a half hour tonight. I know first thoughts is that he probably wasn't tired enough but this was all between 10 and 10:30, which is later than his usual bedtime. I know it could be teething or reaching new milestones etc. but I am not sure what to do to help him fall asleep better. Luckily there was no crying but I just felt like it was never going to end and hope this is temporary. Anyone else experience this? I finally got him to sleep by rubbing his back for a bit. Any suggestions is appreciated.
Re: playing in crib at bedtime
DS does this at nap times and some times after he wakes up, he'll just want to sit and play for a bit before letting us know he wants out. If he's not upset, then let him play. I think self directed play is great for baby development and he's probably just enjoying a little quiet playtime away from everyone.
I don't have the bumper put in because DS would just use it as a step to help himself out of the crib. We use our bumper as a teething rail.
I would guess that it's milestone related, that he figured out how to stand and look out his crib, he thinks it's fun, so he keeps doing it.
Honestly, if he's happy in there and not screaming, I'd let him be. You could try an earlier bedtime, if DS goes to bed too late, he doesn't fall asleep easily.
