Mamas with LOs with food allergies/sensitivities

I was told early on DS had eczema and after researching what it was it struck me as odd that no one in our families have food allergies/sensitivities, so I chalked it up to environmental causes. I have gone great length to make sure personal care, detergents, cleaning products etc in my home are as natural/organic as possible.

Yet, DS has had a flair up for about a month now and it's only getting worse, typically eczema, dry/rough and/or red patches. It started about two weeks after he started drinking WCM. My gut says is the milk. But he has been eating lots of dairy since 6 mo. Eggs? I had an intolerance to eggs as a child that I outgrew; DS has been eating eggs for months. Wheat/gluten? I try to keep his wheat consumption to a minimum but as all the rest I mntioned he has been exposed to them for months. I read somewhere that food allergies/sensitivities can be mistaken for seasonal allergies and minor GI problems. I [hope this is not TMI] constantly have a bloating/gas problem and a "seasonal" allergy that last all year 'roud. I'm still BF.

What are your thoughts? Is it possible I could have some food sensitivities and not know it and DS is having the same problem? Should I stop WCM (he drinks only about 2-3 oz at a time since he still nurses "full time". I'm trying to schedule with pedi but nothing open for another 3 weeks so I wanted some input I know some of you have dealt with these issues. TIA!

Re: Mamas with LOs with food allergies/sensitivities

  • My daughter has had a dairy /soy intolerance since birth. I didnt know what was wrong but I knew something wasn't right despite doctors doubting me. I was bf so I completely eliminated all dairy , soy and eggs and within 3 days I had a completely different child. She had been bloated, had diahreah and screamed after every meal. After elimination she was calm , content and slept so much better. My advise would be to follow your gut, eliminate ECM and see if there is an improvement. Almond milk may be a good alternative because I don't know if it stands up nutritionally to milk. To this day my daughter can tolerate cheese and eggs but still cannot tolerate any kind of milk. Hope this make sense
  • We are dealing with some food sensitivities and eczema here but the pedi is thinking that it may be from fruit.  Her dr said that it has something to do with the way she processes the acids in the fruit and then when she poops it gets on her skin and causes a rash, she gets it on her face from when she eats it.  I have it narrowed down to possibly blueberries, watermelon or cantelope.  He pretty much told me to stop all fruit and then to start reintroducing them one at a time like when she was first starting to eat.  If you think that it could be milk try to stop all milk and see if it gets better and then you can go from there as far as reintroducing it later.  If he is still EBF he doesn't really have to have WCM.

  • N has had eczema since he was a couple of months old. At 10 months, I kissed him while eating a peanut butter sandwich and he broke out in hives. We were referred to an allergist and his skin prick test came back positive for a peanut allergy.

Even though he doesn't get exposed to any peanuts and I no longer BF, he still has eczema on his back.
