Sleep Regression in older child right B4 the birth

Hey Ladies,

I am having a problem with my almost 2 year old.  She has STTN from almost 5 weeks on.  Of course the occasional day or two she hasn't, but for the most part she's been a dream sleeper and napper.

All of the sudden she gets out of her big girl bed (which she transitioned to heavenly 2 mo. ago), turns on her night light or opens the door and lays in the hallway, or if she doesn't try to open the door...just screams bloody murder for about 10-15 min.  She really wants my DH to go in and just be with her, but we Ferberized along time ago and don't want her getting used to only falling asleep with someone next to her ESPECIALLY because the twins are due any day now!

Little background: of course there have been changes in the household.  We recently switched the 2 main rooms of the house to accomodate the twins sleeping with us, my In-Laws came/left/came/left for a visit (strange timing), and she knows my belly is growing and says, "Babies!", but I don't think she REALLY knows.  Could it be these changes that have her sleep so screwy?

Anyone have any experience with this kind of sleep regression - especially right before the birth?  I'm worried that she's going to be high maintenance and LOUD just when these babies are coming home and it's going to make for a horrible transition.

Would appreciate ANYTHING you have to offer.  thanks.

Re: Sleep Regression in older child right B4 the birth

  • Don't have any suggestions for you but I can say I'm right there with ya! My son turned 25 months today. We went through about 3 months of sleep regression, fighting bedtime and naps, the whole bit.  We Ferberized him at a year old and he's been a GREAT sleeper and STTN ever since.  For about 3 months recently he fought going to bed every night, screaming over an hour some nights, making me absolutely crazy.  As suddenly as it started it finally ended and we've had a few month of peace and back to our normal routine.

Fast forward to this week.  He jumped out of his crib for the first time 2 nights ago.  Scared the heck out of me.  I didn't hear him land, but I heard him come out of his room, he was crying and panicked.  When I rushed him downstairs to look at him I realized he was bleeding and had smeared blood over his face.  I freaked but stayed calm and cleaned him up.  Turns out he had just bitten his tongue, on both sides, when he jumped out and he was fine.  Tonight, he has jumped out of his crib THREE times!  :(  He's mastered how to do it very gracefully now and can do it with little effort.

Sooooo, I'm off to buy a bedrail tomorrow and attempt to convert him to a toddler bed.  I'll be 35 weeks on monday and SO NERVOUS about making this transition right now when the girls could LITERALLY be arriving any day now!  :(  Soooooo, I have no idea what's going on.  Maybe they sense it and are acting up?  I agree, I don't think he gets it either.  Though he does say Baby, and he sees new toys/cribs/beds being set up, but I don't think he REALLY knows what's going on.

Good luck to you and let me know if you discover anything that helps!

  • Oh man, how scary to find him with blood!!!  Good thing you stayed calm.  Well, if it's anything like your experience, we've got a little over 2.5 months to go before she returns to her normal self!  Womp*womp.

Thanks for the words, and good luck to you!
