Two Under 2

Potty training two at once? Anybody done it?

My boys are 363 days apart. They will be 2 and 3 in September. What does anybody think about training them at the same time? The little one catches on very quickly and likes to imitate behavior. I haven't even tried to put him on the potty yet but he's very easy going and I think he will like it. The older one pees on the potty any time I ask him to. Any thoughts? Thanks

  • Haven't done it because my 33-mo-old is stubbornly resisted anything potty-related.  We are in the midst of a major international move so it doesn't make sense for me to push her until we are settled (at which time she will be 35 months old).  My other one will be 22 months and I'm kind of hoping they will train together, too, and before #3 arrives!

  • I think we'll end up doing it. I'm going to put more effort into PTing DD1 soon, and DD2 loves to do everything she does. I'm going to try the method of sticking DD1 in undies for a few days so that she starts paying more attention to tell me when she needs to go, so I need to stock up on big girl panties first. I have a feeling DD2 will be all about copying her and wearing big girl panties too. I'll probably try it in a month or two, when DD3 eats a little less frequently.

  • Our pediatrician really recommended this to me because DD,  I kind of tried it, but in the end, wanted to focus more on DS who basically figured if DD was doing it, he didn't have to.  My friend had the experience with her 2 who are 16 months apart that the younger one was catching on quickly and the older one was losing interest, so she focused just on her older one first too.  Depends on the kids!

  • We just focused on DS1 and DS2 started copying a few months later. DS2 won't poop on the potty yet but he has peeing down.

This for us too.  DD loves sitting on the potty, DS had no interest.  DS is older and the one who actually needed to be trained for school, etc.  So we focused on DS first.  DS pretty much has it down now, so  I think we will start working on DD soon.  She will probably be easier than DS just because she is much more interested.

  • We did it (not on purpose though), DS2 was 3 1/2 and DD1 was 2.  We were trying to PT DS2 and DD1 just hopped right in there and joined.  IME girls catch on much younger/quicker than boys.  Both my boys were 3 1/2 before they were even close being ready, DD1 was PT, day and night by 2 1/4, we are still working on DD2.
