Dilemma...What would you do?

I have been dealing with a bludged disc in my lower back since Sept 2011.  I seem to have 3 bad months and then 3 good months and then repeat the cycle.  I am currently dealng with a lot of back pain BUT...

I found out today that I am ovulating on the correct side (my left side is blocked) and that my IUI could be as early as Friday.

My dilemma is:  Should I go ahead with a potential pregnancy with my history of back issues or should I wait?

My biggest concern with waiting is that if we wait until my back is 100%, we may never have a family.  I also don't want to spend my pregnancy on bed rest!

Argh...HELP.  What would you do?

Re: Dilemma...What would you do?

  • It is a tough choice and unfortunately it is one of those decisions that only you can make. My two cents though is do what you are most comfortable with. Personally, I would choose to move forward because as you said if you wait you may never have a family if you wait for your back to be 100 percent better. However, I would probably ask my RE their opinion and use that in making my final decision. Good luck in whatever you decided to do!

  • I'll tell you why I can't give you an honest vote... I want more than anything to tell you to go ahead and do it... however... my husband had a very badly bulged disc and did nothing about it except make it worse by constantly working until it finally herniated, causing him to be on bedrest for 7 months and then have major back surgery. ... his back will never be the same, and now he has to be extremely careful what he does to avoid herniating the other bulged disc he has. On the other hand, I know that when dealing with IF, it's always a now or never type feeling, so I get that as well. In the end, I think you should talk to your RE about it. Good luck!

  • I just happened to be lurking but wanted to give you my two cents. Siggy warning I guess? I don't know the protocol here.

Anyhow, I was going through treatments (steroid shots, tons of PT, had a surgery scheduled) for chronic back pain due to 3 bulging discs when I got pregnant (we had been trying over a year and all but given up) . Getting pregnant absolutely healed my back pain. During pregnancy I saw a chiro and went to PT regularly. My ortho and neuro both said the relaxation of the muscles and ligaments due to pregnancy could have helped things "settle" better and I was pain free for the most part, I had some normal sciatica issues but was better equipped to handle it. I also got prenatal massages regularly.

So my advice is go for it!

  • Back pain is one of those tricky things that can be really hard to truly "fix," and IF is one of those things that only gets worse the longer you wait. I understand your concerns about your back, but what you could spend a lot of time and money on your back before seeing results. I would just hate to wait and compromise my chances at having children.

That said, I don't know how bad your back pain is, and only you can decide whether it's something you could deal with. Either way you go, I wish you the best of luck!

  • What are you currently doing for your back?  Have you been to a PT?  Have you done traction?  Are you taking pain medications that could harm the baby?  ::When:: you do get pregnant if your back is still bothering you, I would try to find a Women's Health Physical Therapist to work with your during your pregnancy.  Good luck to you!

  • Right now I am currently going to physio therapy as well as using a therapy pool 2 times a week.  At physio I do traction, heat and they use the IDF (helps with inflammtion and pain) on me.  I also have home stretchs and strengthening that I do on a daily basis!!  Work is my biggest enemy because I have an office job and I sit at my desk a lot.  My back just can't handle sitting at the present time!

In the past I was taking medications for my back but I found that they do not work so I havent taken any in a few months.  No point if I wasn't seeing results!

  • Thank you to everyone who responded and voted.

DH and I decided to go ahead with the IUI which was TODAY. YAY Big Smile!  It's finished and now I begin the two week wait...argh!
