Strugglilng with having to gain weight

I've been on W.Watchers for past 5-7yrs on and off.  Before I got pregnant I lost 10lbs and I know that I need to gain weight and I HAVE been eating, and trying to eat healthy for the most part, but giving in when I have a craving once and while, yesterday I ate a bag of cheddar fries, but after I felt bad.  Is anyone else struggling with this also?

Re: Strugglilng with having to gain weight

  • Everything in moderation I'd say. Just as long as you don't eat fries daily, I'd feel fine about indulging, after all, you are pregnant. That being said, some people do eat junk daily and have perfectly fine babies, but we all know it's better to try and eat healthy. If you want dessert...have it!

  • My first pregnancy, I CRIED when I hit 140 and again when I hit 150 so on and so forth (I started at 133). I ended up weighing 172 when I got to the hospital to have him (a lot of it was water weight). A few weeks later, I had lost 25lbs and was continuing to lose it from BFing. Then they put me on Mirena (I had it removed due to complications) and at that point it became extremely difficult for me to lose weight (I ended up losing 10lbs within the month they took it out, and then another 10 after that the next month).

After A LOT of work, I am actually BELOW my pre-preg weight from DS. My weight right now is 130lbs. I am EXTREMELY afraid of blowing up like I did with DS. BUT the best thing is that I learned what NOT to do! lol! Drink LOTS of water, exercise regularly, and eat small, frequent meals. I have been doing that this go around and I feel SO much better than I did during the 1st tri with DS! SO and I went for a 5 mile hike on Saturday, I hit the gym every morning and do light cardio and some light lifting, I keep granola bars, rice cakes, and crackers at me desk at work, I drink water/gatorade all day long... So far, just LOTS of having to pee and NO m/s! lol

A lot of women make the mistake of thinking they are "eating for two" when they are pregnant - I know I did. But think about it this way: You ARE eating for two, but the other person isn't NEARLY the same size you are. You shouldn't have to add a whole lot of calories to your diet, but it will go up (don't double it... then you WILL get huge. lol). And ALWAYS talk to your doctor about all of it! They can talk to you about how much you should be gaining and how to eat healthy.

Just make sure you drink lots of water and continue to exercise. And besides, having a cheat day every once in awhile isn't going to be horrible :) I do it!

They say you only have to eat an additional 300 calories for the baby

  • I really struggled with the numbers on the scale with my first. This time I have a lot of anxietyy about gaining as much but I'm doing better with my portions and have given up soft drinks completely.

With my first I gained 65lbs, yes that is a 65! It got to the point where I was so depressed about the weight that I would step on the scale backwards at my dr appointments. I gained 20 just in the first trimester and I was puking 10 times a day! This time I have only gained 5 whew!

Anyway, a lot of mine was water weight and I lost 30lbs before I even left the hospital!

I know it's hard but now is not the time to be hard on yourself about your weight. Eat healthy but treat yourself once in a while- you deserve it!!!! Drink a lof water and take walks when you can. I promise the weight gain is worth it and once you have the baby so much of the weight will be gone right away!!

Don't get down on yourself if you have a few snacks here and there, enjoy this time and remember you are growing a baby- you deserve whatever snack makes you happy:)

  • I know how you feel though. I had weighed 230+lbs. Started working out a lot and eating right and lost 60 lbs in 8 months. So I'm still bigger than I would like to be, but I'm terrified of getting really big again. It is tough losing weight, but I'm just trying really hard to be smart about what I'm eating and doing this is my first pregnancy and definitely don't want to gain a lot.

  • Thank you  ladies.

I have snacky things in my desk draw at work, I have been craving ham/bacon egg and cheese so I try to get that at least 1 a week from a breakfast place so I don't deprive myself. I walk to and from the train station before and after work, which is about a 12-15min walk depending on how fast I walk.   And I'm only following the plan to extend of choosing fruit instead of ice cream, or trying to get a "healthier" version of a junk food.  I was 153 before preg, and at 9wks on 5/21 I weighed in at 155.5, not sure what I'm at now, but size 12pants are still big.  I'm going to have to deal with the fact that within the coming months I'm going to be putting on more weight and there's nothing I can do about it NOR should I.  I'm just trying not to use the pregnancy "as an excuse to overeat."  It's just difficult when you set your mind to losing and not gain.  Argghhh.

  • I was having issues with it at first.  I've been working on losing weight for over a year now and it was going well.  Its hard knowing that I'm going to be gaining weight, but I have to keep reminding myself its for a fantastic reason!  What better reason to gain than having a healthy baby!  Just eat junk in moderation.

BTW, WW has a pregnancy plan.

  • Yes! I just lost 30 pounds and knowing that Im supposed to gain at least 15 pounds of that back bothers me! Im also having a hard time figure out how to just eat healthy and not actually diet! UGH! I know I will be okay with the weight I gain because I know its a baby and we have wanted one for so long but I just dont want to gain a lot!

  • Totally. I feel like I have spent my whole life (well literally more than half my life) trying to not gain weight.  It's very hard to know that you HAVE to and WILL gain weight.  I was in a very good spot of eating right, working out and was at my ideal weight when I got pregnant.  I'm hoping I can continue to eat right, but eat more of the good stuff and keep up with the exercise.  So far I'm working out as often, but less intensely (I'm at about 7 weeks).

I totally crave bacon too and have been having it about once week.

  • Me too.  I am already not at an ideal weight so I don't want to gain.  I'm sticking to eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and having one snack in between lunch and dinner.  I generally wouldn't have this.  There's the extra calories!  So far I've gained 0.
