Cloth Diapering

Redness

My 8mo son, who is really only in CDs at night and on the weekends, has had redness in his last few diapers.  We primarily use BG 4.0's but I have one BGE and a few GroVia AIOs.  He gets it in overnight diapers and daytime diapers, and he's not a heavy wetter during the day.  It's not painful, it's not bumpy, it's just red.  He does not get this in disposable diapers.  I assumed it was from the moisture of the diaper, but i'm starting to think it might be a suedecloth sensitivity or detergent sensitivity.  How can I diagnose this/fix this?  I've done a hot water strip on my diapers, to rule out buildup, and I think we're good there (I ran until I saw no soap bubbles).  I'm going to try using just the BGEs and GroVia's for the next few changes to see if he responds better to the cotton.  If it is the suedecloth, can I use fleece or something going forward as a barrier in the 4.0's, or would it be best to destash and invest in more natural fibers?  If he's still red in the cotton, do I then assume it is the detergent (we currently use Dropps)?  Is there anything else it could be?

Thank you so much!  I really want to make this work.

  • I think it's the suede cloth sensitivity, as with my DD. We use the Tots Bots for overnight but you can try using fleece lined diapers (anything besides BGs) and see if that helps. It's much cheaper than natural fibers. You can also use a fleece liner but those tend to bunch up. We use Oh Katy diapers for pockets (similar to BG but opening is on the front + they are fleece lined)  and she does well with them also.

  • Of course this would pop up after I decided to go full-time CD and bought (and prepped) 6 new BG 4.0's :(

Get some fleece and cut it into rectangles.  It solved all of our red fanny problems.

  • I would just try fleece liners.  Also, make sure your LO's bum is totally dry before you put the CD on.  You could try a barrier cream (like the grovia magic stick) if wetness is the issue.

  • I'll give fleece liners a try.  If I wanted to make some fleece liners myself, is there a certain type of fleece to get?  I seem to remember something about blizzard - do or don't use this type?

    Thanks for your help
