I apologize if this has been discussed. H and I were thinking Catherine but the more I think about it, the more I like Kate. What do you think about Kate as a stand alone 1st name and not a nn?
I love the name Kate, and I've seen it discussed more and more for MN without doing Catherine. As far as a nn for a fn, this is one of the better ones. But, she may go through life with people assuming that she's a Catherine. My grandpa had a nn for a fn, and people always put the full name on mail and official papers because that's what they assumed his real name was.
If you don't mind that, then I think it's okay. I think Kate may be elegant and sophisticated enough to stand alone.

HSG: Right tube blocked; unable to clear
I seriously love Kate, the problem is (I'm a pretty young poster, only 25) and I grew up with about 5-8 Kate/Katie/Katelyn's in my class. To me, it screams "common name," even though it's a classic.
I like it as both a standalone name or a NN, but I especially prefer it as a standalone middle name.
My DD is Kate but it is her nickname. Her formal name is Katherine. That said, we introduce her as Kate and at school her name tags and such say "Kate" so it is absolutely her name to most people.
Kate can stand alone. I just prefer my daughter having choices and a versatile name she can grow up with. My name is short and nickname-ish and I always wished my parents had given me the formal option for my professional life. So for us, Katherine was the natural name to give her. Thankfully, I find Katherine to be a lovely name so even though we rarely call her that I have no regrets .

I was coming on this board to ask the same exact question! I am pretty set on Kate and I think it will only be Kate. I am not crazy about Katherine, and I don't want to always have to correct people that she goes by Kate. I think I will avoid all of that by just naming her Kate.
