GTKY: Did/Will you eat your wedding cake on 1 yr ann?

Hi ladies -

Mine & DH one year anniversary is coming up on the 25th, and the top of our wedding cake has been sitting in our freezer for the past year. Well, sorta. We got married last June and moved from Kansas City to New Jersey in July. The cake traveled with us. One day in dry ice, the other in regular ice. So, I'm a little afraid of what this cake will taste like.

Anyway, just curious  if anyone else did this and just how awful was it? ;)

  • My DH and I did have our cake on our 1 year anniversary.. and surprisingly, it tasted the same as it did on our wedding day!  I think it's a cute and fun tradition.

Congrats on your upcoming anniversary, girl!

  • ive only been married a month and last night DH opened the freezer and said "are we really going to eat that next year?" I told him yes and he says he would rather call the baker that made it and have them duplicate it and it be fresh... i have to say i agree with him because year old freezer cake doesn't sound appetizing.

We ate ours when we got back from the honeymoon... We barely got to eat any at our wedding.  Our Bakery gives you a free fresh topper of the your wedding cake for your one year anniversary so there was no need to save ours.

I have heard mixed reviews from my friends on how theirs tasted!  Probably depends on how it was frozen and the type of cake.

We ate ours on our 1 year.

Our cake was a homemade carrot cake. (THE best carrot cake I have had in my life.)  I have to say it didn't taste that great even though we made sure to wrap it very well.  I will just remember how good the cupcakes tasted on our wedding day. I should really just make a batch! The recipe had pineapple in it, so the cupcakes were so moist.

I would PIP pictures, but I just lost them all when I changed phones. :(

  • We took a bite. It was a bit stale despite having followed strict directions on how to store it. It was edible if I'd been starving, but luckily I wasn't!

  • I did not keep any cake for my one year anniversary. I don't want to eat cake that had been frozen for a year.

    EDIT for spelling.

  • Yes, we ate ours and it was yummy!

The baker wrapped it in multiple layers of clingwrap, so it didn't get frost or freezer burn. Good luck! I hope yours is yummy too!

  • We ate ours!  I was shocked by how good it tasted a year later.
  • We did eat ours on our 1 yr. and it tasted amazing!  My MIL wrapped it very good, so it had no freezer burn.  We took it out about 2 days before our anniversary and put it in the fridge so it would be thawed out in time.

     Happy early anniversary!

We didn't do it!  I kept it until we moved from the west coast to the east coast.  I thought about it and decided that their was no way I was going to drive that cake 32 hours across the country.

lol I thought about this too. It was 18 hours from KC to NJ. Guess we'll see how it turns out =)

  • We had ours on our 1 year anniversary. I kept nagging DH to eat it sooner since the bakery we got the cake from would make us a new cake for the anniversary. Needless to say it was mighty tasty (to both our surprise) and it was great getting all that freezer space back once it was all gone. :)

    Now I want cake....

    Pregnancy Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • No we didn't save the top tier, we did have leftover of the bottom tier for about 2-3 months after the wedding. Our baker has a deal when you buy a wedding cake she makes you a fresh topper for your one year anniversary. So we ate a fresh cake topper.
  • When we do get married, I bet we will. Unless we both decide to eat it the day after.

I know, for sure, my cake will be one of my most coveted things at my wedding. I will spend more money on that cake than I will my dress (well, maybe, haha) to make sure it looks and tastes amazing.

And now I'll go eat a piece of left over b-day cake. Big Smile

  • We had our wedding venue prep it in case we wanted to, but we ended up eating it at like 1 month I think instead of a year. We were moving and I didn't want to move it. Also, I was planning on getting a new top made for our 1st anniversary, but our 1st and 2nd have come and gone and I didn't do it, haha. And our bakery just went out of business so I guess that isn't ever happening:(

  • Nope! Our electricity went out one night and even though we never opened the freezer door, DH thought everything was bad so he threw it out. Unfortunately I was not there to protest this action so we ended up having cake from our local bakery. Honestly I wasn't too upset we weren't able to eat our original cake.

  • Our one year anniversary is on the 17th and we will be eating the top of our wedding cake. My MIL made our wedding cake and has been storing it for us in her freezer. According to her, because of how she stored it, it should taste the same as it did on our wedding day. I've been looking forward to having a piece because our cake was cream filled, except for the bottom layer (for stability). Well the day of the wedding I never got a piece of the cream filled cake, they handed it out to all our guests but not us. I was so disappointed. If it doesn't taste great I'm sure my MIL will make us a new one.
