Hello, I have been lurking for the last month. I have always wanted to adopt, well as long as I have been planning my family. I have wanted to grow my family by adoption. My first child is biological and I want to start the adoption process so that the next child will be reasonably close in age (about 2-3 years apart). I also would prefer for an international adoption from India (because I am from India). My husband is working as a professor and I am in school working on my masters. We are both in our early thirties. I really am excited about starting the process. My husband and I are reading the Complete Idiots Guide to Adoption.
But as I started reading into it and reading news articles about unethical and illegal practices that sometimes happen with international adoption, it really scares me. I would never want to adopt a child whose mother was coerced into giving up her child, or whose child was stolen. It keeps me up at night, not knowing how to be sure.
Even if you work with an established agency in the US how do you know that the international orphanage is above the board, or that they themselves were fooled.
Re: Intro and questions (or maybe fears)
Welcome
Great questions... as you get more serious about IA, there are questions and checks/balances to look for in evaluating agencies. There are plenty of great agencies with great intentions. As with anyting, the negative stories get all of hte attention.
As you know, there's a great need for help in India with many children in orphanages. You will just need to vet the agency and processes to make sure you have a comfort level.
