June 2012 Moms

Are your feet swollen when you wake up?

This morning, my feet/ankles are already pretty swollen.  I have slightly worse swelling in my left foot than right.  Does anyone else wake up with swelling?  I'm just not sure if it's normal.  I can't say I have noticed this before; it's usually after I have been walking around and then improves when I get off my feet.  I can call the OB at 8, but I figured I'd ask here in the meantime.

  • Lurking from July 2012...

I am the exact same way. It started this past weekend for me. However it's my right foot that gets more swollen then my left. So weird. I'll notice it when I get out of bed and step down and feel that tightness of my skin stretching over my foot!

  • yes, in fact that is the only time during the day that my hands and feet are swollen is during the night or when I first wake up...soon as I walk around I'm good. Doc says as long as your BP is normal then it's nothing to worry about
  • I am a giant water balloon and am swollen all day - from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, to the moment(s) I wake up in the middle of the night to pee.

My doctor isn't worried because my bp and protien have  been just fine the whole pregnancy.

  • My feet are usually pretty good first thing in the morning after being in bed all night, but then they swell up as soon as I start walking around and putting weight on them. My hands though are a whole other story. My fingers are like sausages when I first wake up. Unless I consistently drink my 2 liters of water every day, they stay swollen and stiff all day.

Same for me.  My fingers have been swollen for months now and I can't wait to wear my wedding rings again!  I find if I put my feet up a few times a day they feel much better at night.

  • I wake up with them a little swollen and then they get progressively worse throughout the day...  Usually, my left foot is worse than my right.  I heard that when 1 side is worse than the other it means THAT is the side that the baby is laying on.

The swelling has been the most frustrating thing for me this entire pregnancy!!!

  • So normal. Drinking lots of water and flexing your feet can help a bit. If you can, stand on the bottom step of some stairs, then gently, with your heels a bit over the edge, hold on to the railing and gently tread up and down. This can help loosen your Achilles tendon which - when super tight - can make the swelling much worse. This advice is from my physical therapist, without whom I would have had a very hard pregnancy.

  • Yes, my hands and feet are always slightly swollen when I wake up.
  • Mine usually aren't swollen until the end of the day, if they are at all.
