Due date (40 weeks) July 2, 2012 (38 weeks) June 18, 2012
Actual arrival date: June 2, 2012
Started contractions on May 31, 2012 at noon (our 4 year anniversary) but tried to convince myself I was making it up. They weren't horrible but definitely there. So husband counted 18 contractions in from 12-1pm, and 21 from 1-2. Called dr, they said come into the office, but then called back and said the hospital has a twin monitor so we needed to go there, it's only 2 buildings away so it's not a big change in direction.
We drove the hour + 30 minutes to the hospital, and triage gets monitors on, and yep there are contractions. We get checked, we're 1-2, 100% effaced, but get orders to go walk around for 2 hours.
We come back 2 hours later, we're a good solid 2, maybe 2.5. So we are told that we can't really get admitted because it's contractions, and but not full blown labor yet. So they tell us to go next door to the hotel and get a room, wait for horrible contractions or water to break and then come back. So we go get a room, jacuzzi tub, huge bed, incredible room service, and we re-realize it's our anniversary and our girls got us a pretty great evening in a jacuzzi tub! OK girls!
So the contractions are there, but I spend almost the entire evening in the tub, not really feeling the contractions get much, I convince myself they have calmed down. I get in bed, and get some sleep. 2am I wake up and well, they are back! I walk the room until 4am. Decide walking brings on one solid contraction so we decide to walk over to the hospital. Triage back in and we're still 2ish cm dilated. So they call the dr, she says go back to hotel, meet my dr in the office at 8am. This is by far the most frustrating part.
Dr says we're 3-4, we get a wheelchair ride back to triage! We are getting admitted once we're a good solid 4. Get to triage, and yep, they tell us to go walk! (wheelchair ride, then told to walk... yeah, not even going to guess logic there). We walk, dr checks 2 hours later, and we're 4! She strips membranes and we're admitted in full blown labor 10 minutes later.
Admitting: 5 minutes later, our l & dnurse comes in, takes us to our room, it's HUGE! 15 minutes later anesthesia walks in, 8 minutes later epidural and 4 minutes later, PAIN FREE! We labor from then until 5 am saturday, when they check me and we're 10 cm and ready to push. We start pushing and then I hear "WOAH! she's ready!!!" So dr walks in, goes back to or (twins deliver in OR), we're ready to go. I had been puking most of the time at this point, so I puke my way back to OR (stretcher ride).
Delivery: 8 minutes later, we're ready to go, a few pushes and Julia Riley is born at 6:50 am, no pain, no complications, minor tear, told it was a 2 degree tear.
Interesting Part: Husband goes to hang out with Julia who decides to stop breathing a bit, they have people all around her, but I'm told "she's fine, the mood would be a lot different if she wasn't" so I'm trying to pay a little attention to her, but she's crying a bit. They say she's not going to NICU yet so I relax.
Not so fun part: Start pushing, both are vertex, and I see the color drain out of dr's face. Epidural immediately starts to wear off and OH MY GOSH....P A I N. So I'm not having fun, dr is really working at something, not sure what is going on. I look down, and the 2nd dr I had never met before is sitting where my dr had been, and I watch the color drain out of her face. I'm starting to get REALLY worried. I said "is she not dropping??" and they look at each other and I hear them both say really loud "CRASH C-SECTION NOW". Husband comes over, they said "cord prolapse over the babies face, with every push her heart beat is down to 40-60. General anesthesia." People start scrambling, next thing I know I'm waking up in my room.
What happened: Husband was in the room the entire time, they never had him leave. He said I was out immediately, and the second I was out they were slicing as fast as they could and everyone was running around. No drapes, no nothing, just cutting and pulling. He actually saw them taping my eyes shut as they were pulling our Teagan Rose at 7:10 am. 5 pounds 7 ozs, apgar of 3, then 8 a few minutes later. He said there were so many people working so fast yet everyone knew exactly what to do. So he didn't get to cut the cords, I think he got something a bit more exciting and special.
Girls went to nicu until I was awake (woke up at 10ish), 10:30 I was wheeled up to see them, they were doing GREAT! 11:10am, we're in our postpartum room (the biggest room they had) and the girls are brought right in. They stayed with us the entire time from then out except for car seat test. Julia only lost 1 oz over next 2 days, Teagan lost 2 ozs. Born Saturday AM, brought home Monday AM! Both girls are eating great, sleeping lots, couldn't ask for any better 36 week girls!
Re: Julia and Teagan have arrived! (long, sorry)
Thanks everyone! We are doing great so far, only real challenges are sleeping at night (daytime sleeping is going amazing lol), and breastfeeding has become pumping full time. It's so hard for 36 week girls to latch on that the effort just seems to burn too many calories, but they will eat from any bottle we give them, so we're simply turning our tables to pumping! It's working out well!
One note I would add, even though we had a really interesting experience, I would say we were not one bit disappointed, or let down by the experience. We went into this with the idea we wanted two healthy girls and what happened would happen and we were going to go with it. In the end we have two healthy happy girls. I don't want to say "don't have goals or a birth plan" but I do suggest going with the flow a little bit. I didn't even have time to print a birth plan, but I'm glad I didn't! To each their own
