if bottle feeding: are you registering for or buying more than one type of bottle?

I'm working on my registry and I'm kind of stuck on which bottles to register for. I like the Avent bottles from prior experience with other children but I heard that every baby is different and could not take to a certain nipple over another so what do I do when it comes to registering/buying? Do I put a few different types of bottles on it or one type and hope baby likes it or change it after he's born?

EDIT: Also, how many/which sizes of bottles should I purchase?

  • I would suggest getting a few bottles of a couple different types. My daughter used Dr. Browns and wouldn't take any others. Also, I would recommend buying the largest size possible. I bought quite a few four ounce bottles and after a short time she was drinking more than four ounces at a time.

  • I registered for Dr. Brown's just because they're less gassy, so I've heard.

  • Some kids definitely prefer one nipple over another.  Some like latex and some like silicone. When I registered for DS, I registered for a bunch of different types of bottles.  No one actually bought me any of them as gifts though.

A friend of mine gave me some Bornfree bottles and Avent bottles.  I had also received some Nuk ones as sample.  I used the Nuk ones at first and DS seemed to like them, but they leaked a bit.  I then tried the Avent.  Again, DS liked them and they didn't leak, but DS was a bit gassy.  I then tried the bornfree and DS took them really easily and never spat up, nor did he have much gas.   When DS hit a year and we switched to milk and sippy's we still used playtex drop ins for his bedtime bottles.

I'd advise to try a few different ones and then buy more of the ones you/your lo like the best.  I used powdered formula when we switched to bottle feeding and you could mix it by the bottle, so I had 4 or 5 -4oz sized one and at least 6 -8oz ones.  If you plan on making your formula ahead, you may want more of each.  Also, get nipples for slow flow for newborn and faster flow for when they get older.

Some ladies are of the view that bottles should be sterilized after each use.  I only sterilized mine the first time, then washed with hot soapy water after each use.  Depending on how you feel about this, you may or may not want to get a sterilizer.  You can't really get one til you figure out what kind of bottles you are using.  You can also just use the boiling pot of water on the stove method, it works for every manufacturer.  Same is true of a bottle warmer.  I never used one.  DS took a bottle at room temp from day one and his milk cold from the fridge when he switched over.  Big, mean, mommy didn't want the hassle of having to wait while he screamed until the bottle was heated to the right temp.

I still have all my bottles from DS and will be getting new nipples so we can reuse them with this lo.  Have fun, chooseing bottle/nipples/warmers/steritizers can be a bit overwhelming.

  • I have Avent bottles on my registry.  I put six 9 ozs. bottles and six 11 ozs. bottles on there.  I already have three 9 ozs. and three 4ozs. at home.  I agree with not registering for the smaller size.  They will eat more than 4 ozs. pretty quickly.  I've heard great things about Avent bottles, and I know it does happen, but my mommy friends haven't had to change bottles, so hopefully neither do I.

I used Playtex with the drop-in liners (4oz & 8oz) for a while, then got some Medela bottles/nipples at a great price. I was pumping anyways, I switched to the Medela probably at 6/7ish months.

I've left the house before without a bottle (DH packed the diaper bag...) and just went to Walgreens/Walmart and bought a cheap bottle. As long as the flow was the same, she could care less how she got her food. So keep in mind, your baby may NOT be picky either.

I dont see why you'd have to change bottles? If you stuck to one, how could they prefer one over the other?

  • My kids mostly BFd, but I needed to do bottles too. DD started with Dr Brown and Avent - wide mouth and regular (they were hand me downs from my BFF's twins, so we had a ton of them). They were all a no go. She had taken a few of the little ready to feed formula bottles though... so I bought some cheapo gerber bottles with latex nipples and she did ok with them (she was never great with any bottle).  DD was born pre-BPA scare, so I was actually able to return all her bottles and got new ones for DS. I just bought some cheapo bottles again. I think I had some Nubys and some Gerber. And he took a bottle much better than she ever did.

I guess my advice is, it's true you never know what kind of bottle they'll take - so start with the cheap ones and work your way up.

This.  I'm a FTM, but I've been told this same thing.  Don't give baby choices and baby won't have a preference.
