Folic Acid??

Some of the reading that I have been doing indicates that I should be taking more than 800mg of folic acid, but when I asked my OB yesterday, he indicated that wasn't necessary. My loss history only feeds my freak outs, and I am worried that I should be taking more. Did you take more than 800mg of folic acid? If so, how much did you take, and for how long? I feel very behind in this game!! I have two older children, but I know absolutely nothing about carrying or raising twins!! Stick out tongue Are there any books that you read during your pregnancy that you rec? I have decided that google is NOT my friend during this pregnancy, and am trying really hard to "stay away from the google", as my OB would say Confused

I think I took a gram (plus whatever was in my PNV.) My first MFM suggested it (so I wouldn't have started that until 16 weeks) and when I left him for another MFM (at 22ish weeks) he said I could keep taking it, wouldn't hurt, but he wouldn't have prescribed it to me.

  • I was also prescribed additional Folic Acid (in addition to what is in my prenatals) at 9 weeks - my first OB appointment. I'm not sure of the amount though.

My prenatal vitamin has 800 mcg of folic acid. We found out at 10 wks it was twins and my OB instructed me to take an additional 400 mcg.

  • I took additional supplement, don't remember how much, but it's whatever Walmart sells in the vitamin aisle. My OB was okay with it and said whatever your body doesn't need will flush out.

and yes, stay away from Dr Google. :)

  • I am taking ~6mg a day between my prenatal (Target brand), 2mg of prescription Folic Acid, and what is in my Corvite (iron supplement).  I know when they found out I was having two increasing the folic acid was one of the first things they did.

  • I took an additional Folic Acid supplement when I found out it was twins. I think you do need it, and I would question your OB further. I think it's most important in the first trimester though.

  • I took something like 5x the normal amount, but, my ob prescribed that since my previous loss was due to a folic acid deficiency (anencephaly).  Like someone else said, whatever your body doesn't need, it flushes out.
