How to heat formula?

Can I heat the water in the microwave first and then add the powder or is the microwave a big no no? TIA.

  • I wouldn't recommend the microwave.  The microwave creates pockets of hot, warm and cold so you risk burning baby.  With DD1 I would put the water in the bottle (or mix the water and powder) and then run it under the tap while swirling the bottle so it would be evenly warmed.

  • Microwave = NO  If you test the forumla it could appear ok but in the liquid it could contain hot spots and hurt your lo.

What I did, was take a coffee cup fill with water, microwave for about 2 min and then put the bottle in the hot water....test and serve

I actually brought one and they stink to be honest.

They either didn't warm it enough or was to warm

  • I'll confess. DS was FF, and I always microwaved the water first. I didn't get it super hot, just slightly warm. I figured that the amount I had to shake it after I added the powder would get rid of any hot spots. DS never got burned.

  • Honestly, we use the microwave when we need to.

But another option is to get some of the Brita filter bottles and (if your baby will take a room temp bottle) just mix it that way. It makes it a heck of a lot easier when you're on the go and there are no health benefits to a warm bottle based on the research I've done.

Sometimes our LO will even take a cold bottle if we've been in the car and he's really warm, and our pedi said cold is just fine if he'll take it. Makes it easier when they transition to cow's milk.

  • I don't heat my formula. I keep filtered, room temperature water in a sealed container on the counter. Then when he needs fed I just add the formula, shake, and serve.

  • You know you don't have to warm formula, right? Your life will be much easier if you serve formula room temp or even cold.
