First, just because there's a family history of big babies doesn't mean you will necessarily have one. One of my closest friends was over 9lbs, her DH was over 10lbs, and both her boys were under 7lbs.
Second, just because your mom's pelvis couldn't accomodate a larger baby doesn't mean yours can't. Some women can deliver 12lb babies with no tears. Some people need c-sections for 6lb babies because of their pelvis. Also, if you have a 10lb baby that's really long, it's not necessarily much wider than a short baby that might weigh less.
Third, weight doesn't affect delivery as much as the size of head/shoulders/position. It may be easier to deliver a 10lb baby with an average size head in good position than a 7lb baby with a large head/sunny side up with arm coming out first.
Both my Mom and Sister never had any trouble having their babies, but I am built like my paternal grandmother and it is safer for me to have c-sections.

Also, I would add to this, that I believe they weren't as adept back in the day at identifying actual CPD and were quick to c/s for a 'too large baby'.
