What is the point of getting a diaper pail? I plan on throwing dirty diapers in the trash. If smell is the issue, why not throw them in the garbage outside? Maybe I'm just being an ignorant FTM but they seem useless IMO. Maybe someone who uses them can fill me in on why they're useful and I'll add one to my registry.

Re: Diaper disposal question
We put dirty diapers in our kitchen trash can. It is metal w/ a closed lid so maybe that helps contain the smell. Occassionally when we open the lid you can smell dirty diapers so we just take the trash out - problem solved.
I had a diaper genie given to me and didn't want to buy the refills. They seemed like just another expense on top of diapers, formula, etc.
THIS
and your house will smell terrible.
Exactly. I never had one with DS and never had a smell issue in my home. Just used a trash can with a lid, bagged the poopy diapers and took the trash out regularly. You may go through 12-16 diapers a day but majority are just wet diapers and with a regular trash can with a lid it's plenty sufficient to contain any smell. I think the diaper genies are just another thing that, yeah it may be nice but certainly isn't a necessity.
This. And, if you have a dog, you need one. Otherwise, you'll find shreds of shitty diapers all over your house.
This. We have the diaper genie in the nursery cause we did/do 50% of her diaper changes up there. If we change her downstairs, though, we just use our Simple Human trash can. That gets changed frequently enough that it's not an issue.
This, plus the last thing I want to do at 3 in the morning is run outside to throw the diaper in the trash. (we have a Diaper Champ and still use it with DD's night time pull-ups)
I got two metal garbage cans from Bed Bath and Beyond (https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=18005875)
We are using them for diapers and cat litter (two cats) - we have the nursery downstairs (split level house) and the main floor (kitchen, etc) is upstairs - so I felt the need to have two places to dispose.
I can't speak to the diaper smell issue - but I can tell you this - working in an infant room we had a diaper genie and I found after about 6-12 months the PLASTIC reaked. I have friends that have used the metal garbage cans (careful that you aren't getting one that just has a plastic sleeve on the inside as you may end up with the same issue) - used regular garbage bags (we've been using the febreeze ones simply as we have cat litter too) and never had an issue - it has a lid.. etc. Be warned though - her 18 month old thinks the garbage can is a fun toy - she got a lock for it recently.
We never got one and honestly never needed it. Like pp said smell wasn't much of an issue until DD was on solids and at that point she pooped 1-4 times a day so if we needed to bring it outside wasn't a big deal. We would just double bag the poop diapers and take them to the outside trash as needed. We never had a smell issue.

This.
I have a diaper champ and you can use regular kitchen trash bag.
We had a diaper genie and I thought it was useless so we chunked it. Then I realized that it was actually pretty useful so now I am buying another.
We used a regular trash can for awhile with a lid that closed automatically. It still stunk to high heaven when throwing a soiled diaper in it. DD's room smelled awful after every single diaper change, even the ones where we took the diaper directly out to the trash. You have no idea how well a diaper genie can hide the smell of a poop filled diaper. A regular trash can cannot conceal that smell and it seems wasteful to constantly be changing out trash bags every time there is a poop in there (which we ended up having to do in order to keep our house from smelling terrible).
I'm getting another genie stat. They are worth the $ IMO.
