We started supplementing with formula last week because DS was not gaining enough weight on breastmilk alone. Today we went back to check his weight and he gained 9 oz in one week, which was great, but ever since we started supplementing, he poops so much more. We've gone from 1-2 times a day to anywhere from 4-6 times a day. I asked the nurse at the pedi office today about this and she said it was unusual, but as long as it wasn't diarrhea, it's probably not an issue. I'm just wondering if anyone else's LO started pooping more if you had to supplement. I've read about something called the gastrocolic reflex (which makes some babies poop every time they eat when their stomach gets stretched) and I'm wondering if this is what is happening with DS now that he is eating more. Anyone else experience this with their LO?
Re: Holy crap (literally)
Megaloo - who knew formula was the trick to getting your DD to poop! Once a week is a lot for her, huh?
Seriously, though, I think 4-6 times is normal. The nurse I talked to today, who is also the lactation consultant, said that babies who are on formula poop less (I think that is what she said, I could be wrong), but it seems to me they would poop more because of all the extra. Of course, he's on poop #6 today...I just heard it. Ugh. He'll probably poop in the tub tonight too. Last night he did it twice. Yuck.
