Trying to Get Pregnant

Pregnancy after quitting smoking?

Hey all so i wanted to find out how many of you were smokers before getting preg? I quit right before this cycle so I was just curious if anyone was able to get preg in the same cycle or if it took awhile? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Pregnancy after quitting smoking?

  • I was still smoking when I became pregnant - quit when I found out.

  • How long did it take you to concieve ?
  • I have a lot of friends who didn't quit smoking until they found out they were pregnant.  I wouldn't think it should affect you too much.  That being said TTC can take quite a while regardless of that.

  • I don't really see how there would be a correlation between when you quit and when you conceive?

Anyway, big *high five* to those who have quit!

  • I quit smoking 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant with my first mc last year. I had only smoked for a few months before that. I honestly don't think there is a correlation to quitting smoking and getting pregnant. If you quit you will feel better.

  • Thank you for the responses. I understand everyone is different I was just trying to see if anyone as a smoker experienced getting pregnant right away. I know it can take awhile just was wondering if any smokers were lucky enough to get it quickly.
  • I know quite a few friends who got accidentally pregnant while they were smokers.

  • OP-congrats on quitting smoking!  It may not make you get pregnant any earlier, but it will DEFINITELY improve your overall health, which can only be good for your fertility-and the health of your future children!!

  • For the first 7 or so months of TTC I was smoke free. After months of frustration, I said F it and started smoking again. I plan to re-quit before my next IUI in March, ugh :P

I do have 2 friends who accidentally got pregnant while smoking, one of them continued to smoke through her pregnancy *side eye*

4/14: Break for job change = BFP!! EDD 1/5/15

  • OP - congrats on quitting. It sucks so hard while you're doing it, but I promise it's worth it. Not that it really matters, but I quit in August and got my bfp in November.

    This ^

Worst ever! Not to long ago, I went to a string of baby showers. Every single pregnant mother was smoking. Is this not a concern anymore?! Ugh! I judged, and I judged hard!

Wow. Just wow. I had one cigarette at a party while I was pregnant but before my bfp. It might have even been before implantation. But I still freaked until my dr said I would be fine. I can't imagine doing it the whole time.

  • I had a neighbor who drank and smoked through all her pregnancies.  Managed to get KTFU 4 times despite treating her body like a garbage can 24/7.

Let me tell you what a classy lady she was, and how sad I was to see her leave our neighborhood.

  • The first time I met my SIL she was 6 months pregnant and smoking a cigarette on her front step. I judged and thought how trashy she looked. She quit 2 weeks before our niece was born.

  • Congrats on quitting, it was the hardest thing I ever did.  We've been TTC for 2.5 years and the closest we got to success was a c/p from IVF #2.  I have several family members that got pregnant while they smoked, one has had 3 kids smoked with all of them and they were all 9 lbs plus at birth.  I have another friend who smoked through her pregnancy and had her daughter at around 28 or 29 weeks.

  • I'm not seeing the correlation between smoking and fertility.. Health wise there's a lot of things anyone can be doing that could be just as bad. But then again think about back 30-50 years, pretty sure smoking didn't hinder pregnancy chances lol

I was smoking when I got my BFP with my daughter in 2011. That pregnancy was a BC failure. I relapsed briefly when my daughter was 6 months old, but quit shortly after. I started TTC for #2 in August 2012. I got my BFP in November 2012. So, 3 months TTC.

It's always a good idea to quit. Your body responds differently to any one factor. I know plenty of women who actually smoked all the times they learned they were pg. Quitting is tough. I wish you all the luck with your resolve to quit.

It takes the average couple a year to conceive. So, smoking or not, it still could take you that long or longer. Then again you could get lucky straight out of the gate. There is just no way to know except to try.

    Good luck.

  • Smoking does effect your chances of getting pregnant. By how much? I have no idea. I got pregnant with both children while I was a smoker... Obviously, quit as soon as I found out though.

If you're TTC every little bit helps so quit! :O)

  • I don't think smoking will affect your fertility, most likely. But good for you for quitting! I quit back in 2008, I got pregnant in 2011 (after two months of NTNP).....quitting will have no correlation between how long it will take you to get pregnant...but it's ALWAYS best to be as healthy as you can be while trying. Best of luck!
