Babies: 9 - 12 Months

what are you doing with your LO's?

I'm just curious what everyone is doing with their LO's these days. My son is just about 10 months and he mostly plays with balls, throwing them and chasing them repeatedly. We read every night before bed. It's hard to do so any other time because he just wants to grab the book! He just started to stand up so he loves to pull himself up on the couch or coffee table.

Wondering what other activities could we try?

 Thanks ladies!!!

  • I have a 3 year old so that is built in entertainment. But Cameron likes our tunnel we have, we roll a ball through it and he chases it through the tunnel. We do blocks (he knocks them down), play with a ball, he uses his push walker. He also loves our Busy Ball Popper, but the music is so annoying, we don't use it too much.He loves magnets too, we have them low on the fridge and dishwasher and he sits and plays with that, we have this magnet he likes as well.  We go to the play ground and on walks and he loves the swing. But he mainly just crawls around investigating stuff. We recently got him a Pottery Barn chair (like his sisters) and he loves climbing on it and tumbling off. He is pretty rough and tumble!! We're out and about a lot with big sis's schedule so that helps too.

Bubbles, go on walks, go to the library for story time, read books, practice walking, play with the shape sorter.

  • I'm always amazed when people say they actually read to their LO's.   Not that I won't or don't want to, but our DD gets so MAD when we try to contain her and read.  Sure, she eats the book, but then wiggles so much with frustration that we give up and let her explore.

She pretty much likes to crawl around and explore.   Loves a little bucket we have because she takes things out and throw them, then puts them back into the bucket.   So really, she likes to do her own thing and we try to interact as much as possible, but she's so into crawling around the house that she finds us annoying.

Read, story time at the library, walks, go to park, play with toys, he also play with his push walker and activity table alot, along with the zillion other toys he has.  We also listen to children music cds, sometimes watch baby einstein or mickey mouse clubhouse.

  • She's been walking over a month now, so she really just likes to walk around and explore the house.  She also has a playroom with a few toys in it.  Her favorite is the Fisher Price Playhouse.

We also go for walks every day, play outside in the yard, and listen to music and "sing" songs together.  We "read" to her too, but they're like 4 page books with one word on each page.  She only likes it right before bedtime and yes, she still tries to eat the book.

Here, here! He's just starting to look at some books on his own and with me without eating or tossing them.

Bubbles are great for a few minutes. DS likes to do his own thing - lots of independent play. I ask him for things and see if he'll hand them over, then give them back. He likes stacking things. Loves anything that rolls. I made some Weeble like things out of Easter eggs. He "cooks" - has his own shelf in the kitchen and a box that is like his stove. He did that himself. We go to the park and on walks. Painting is fun, too.

I do it at times she is sleepy and snuggly. Most of the time during the day she "reads" her own books by eating the book/turning the pages.

We read right before bed, sometimes she lays down, sometimes she sits with me and plays with a different book and sometimes she plays with something else.  No matter what she is doing, I switch noisy toys off and read anyway. It's her first signal that bedtime is coming in a few minutes.

ETA: We only read simple, rhyme-like stories anyway that are over within a minute or two.  We pick 3 stories to read each night and the last one is always "Goodnight Moon" or "It's Time for Bed".

So funny how babies are different!  DD is so not very interested in moving around and will sit with rapt attention if she's read to, any time of day, and she's happy just sitting on the floor with a book for a very, very long time.  Of course the downside here is that she's almost 11 months old and still hasn't learned to crawl!
