Getting induced tonight and still no decision on a name, but I found something interesting in my search. I have always liked Jacob, but being so popular has been making it keep going to the bottom of my list. My husband is Christopher and we know so many his age I did not want to do that to my son. So I went to the ssa website to see how many Jacobs there really are. In 2010 there were 21,875 Jacobs born whereas in 1983 when my husband was born there were 59,307 Christopher's and it wasn't even number 1 . So even though it is number 1 with so many name options now, names really aren't as popular as the were 30 years ago.
Now I need some opinions on names we are considering
Jacob Arthur ( Arthur for grandfather)
Gavin micheal
Sean arthur
Any other suggestions are welcome
Tia
Re: Popular names insight / and help
1 Jacob
2 Gavin
Jacob really is not THE most popular name. I believe Aiden with it's 100 different spelling variations surpass Jacob by far. But you also have to add in all the Jake's too, as some people just name their kids by the shortened version now too. (that is if you plan on calling him Jake)
And... to add another thing. Regions have a HUGE roll in the popularity of a name too. Number 1 in Massachusetts is something totally different than in Nebraska.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I like Jacob Arthur.
You're always going to find some other kid with the same name as yours. It is really not that huge of a deal, IMO.
I also like Gavin Michael a lot. That is my second choice.
I love Gavin Michael! That is a contender for us too. The only thing stopping us is that Gavin is becoming more popular. If we have a son, his middle name will be Michael, non-negotiable (husband's family thing that I totally support).
You do have a good point though that names overall are more spread out these days. We keep trying to find a "more unique" version of Gavin, but don't like anything else quite as much yet. (Also, my husband's name is John, so we also do NOT want an overly popular name).

In this order:
1. Jacob
2. Gavin
3. Sean
If you guys love Jacob, go with it. Yes, he'll likely encounter other Jacobs in his life, but it's not the end of the world and these trends vary quite a bit by region too (so while it might be popular nationally, he might be the only one in his age group in your town). I like Jacob Arthur a lot. It's popular because it's a great name.
Gavin Michael is nice too if you do decide Jacob is too popular for you.
