induction 41 or 42 weeks?

Hello.... at my 39 week appointment today my dr. said he recommends scheduling inductions a week past your due date. really don't want to be induced, however, as I read I'm not 100% certain it's the worst thing(i.e, increased fetal weight making vaginal delivery less likely etc....) ladies, what are your thoughts? would/will you be inducing @ 41 or 42 weeks if you go past? ahhhhh confused

Re: induction 41 or 42 weeks?

  • I think I would probably agree to it at 41 weeks.

  • I can't help you on this one... my dr will be inducing on Monday morning if nothing happens before then (at 39+6) due to some sudden symptoms that have started... just wanted to say good luck!

  • My next appointment isnt until I'm 40w2d, if i make it that far, so i'm hoping they won't want to even schedule an induction until after 41 weeks if all look healthy. I dont know if I want to go to 42 weeks but in my ideal world, if I have to be induced, it will be around 41w3d or so.  I would like to give my body as long as possible to try to do this on its own but for some reason 42 weeks is a mental barrier to me.

  • I will have one at 41 completed weeks. My doctor doesn't like to go past 40 weeks at all but I refused to consent until 41 completed weeks or a medical need. Hope that helps!
  • My Dr. will allow me to go to 10 days PDD per our conversation at my 40 week check-up yesterday.  So, at my 41 week appt next Tuesday my Dr. will schedule the induction for a couple days later which would make me 41+2.  Here's hoping baby comes on is own before then!  Maybe at the full moon this weekend :)

  • I'm willing to go to 41+, but I think anything in week 42 is not for me. I had my daughter at 41 weeks 4 days. She was 7lbs 8 oz and 18.5 in. I'm glad I didn't let them induce me. I'm glad I waited for my body to do the work. But, I think I'd want an induction if I made it to the 41 +5 or 6 mark.

  • My doctor will let me go 10 days late.  We have a tentative induction date of June 7/8 if nothing happens before then (due date is May 29).

My doctor will let me go to the 13th which would be 41w4d.  I'm hoping that I won't have to worry about it though and I'll go on my own before then.

I live in Vail, Co and due to the high altitude here, they really don't want you going past 41 weeks (something to do with the placenta - I forget the details), so they induce if you go that long. I am perfectly fine with that, as I dont want to go any longer (hopefully wont go that long!)

Barring any medical issues, as long as I'm fine & baby is fine, doctor will let me go up to 42 weeks.  And I am thankful for that.  Like I said, unless there are medical issues (pre-e, hellp, etc), I'd rather just let nature take it's course, and baby when it's ready!

  • My doc doesn't let you go past 41 weeks & I am fine with that. I have no desire to be pregnant longer than that (especially since 41 weeks for me = 41.5 weeks because my due date is off @ the doctor's office)

I would be induced at 41 weeks, if I can... I am nervous going too far past my due date, as that can cause issues as well.

  • Earlier in my pregnancy, I would have said "No, I will wait until it happens naturally no matter what...blah, blah."  But at this point if I reach 41 weeks and am still pregnant, I am getting induced.

  • My doc and I have scheduled my induction for 40 weeks + 3 days and I am totally OK with that. (I've got no problem with being induced whenever she thinks it's a good idea, getting a C-section if that's what she feels is best, etc. But I am also planning on getting an epidural upon entering the hospital - mostly kidding - and am not going to BF so I'm coming from a different place than I think a lot of the other mommies are....)

I'm having a RCS at 39+3, but if I wasn't, I'd be ok with inducing after 41 weeks, especially if I was uncomfortable.  My last pregnancy I could have been pregnant forever.  I was comfortable, had energy...it was great!  This time, I'm desperate for LO to come anytime now.
  • My dr does it at 42 weeks.

  • I think if likelihood of vaginal delivery is what you're basing your decision on, then a failed induction will much more often bring about a c-section than the a half a pound the baby would gain between Week 41 and 42.

As long as my health is fine and the placenta looks good in ultrasounds, I'm not getting induced until 42 weeks.  There's no reason for it, other than doctors CYA.  I mean, if you really don't want to carry the baby until 42 weeks, that's your prerogative, but to me the increased pain and likelihood of a c-section when inducing would be way worse than the extra week of pregnancy.

  • For my first pregnancy I really wanted to wait at least 42 weeks.  My OB was fine with that, provided  I did NST every 3 days after 41 weeks.  Well, the second one I had at 41w3d showed very low fluid so we induced that day.  It didn't end up working (I had a c-section), but I would do the same thing again if I had to.  I read some studies that showed that the c-section rate did not increase with inductions at 41 weeks because inductions done at 42 weeks had a higher rate of sections done for fetal distress.  I think 41 weeks is a reasonable time to induce, but if it's really important to you to wait, I would talk this over with your doctor.

  • My doc either does inductions at 41 weeks or during the 41st week. Not sure which. If I make it that far (which I probably will, FTM) I'll be more than happy being induced. One of my sisters was induced w/ both her pregnancies (which then it was at 42 weeks) & was able to have her kids vaginally both times.

We had a discussion with our doctor about this on Monday at my 39 week appointment. Baby boy is showing no signs of being ready. He said they will induce at 40 weeks if you want, they strongly encourage it at 41 weeks and won't let you go past 42 weeks. The complications of going too long bring out all the "oh my God there's something growing uncontrollably inside of me!!!!" feelings :). Something about it makes me feel claustrophobic. Along with that, I've apparently got an 8.5+ pounder inside now, so he could do a lot of growing in two weeks. When he started talking about the risk of medical complications and stillbirth at 42 weeks my mind was made up.

While I HATE the idea of being pregnant another week, I think we'll let me go to 41 weeks and induce then. After my first birth which was an induction when my body obviously wasn't ready, I'd rather suffer that last week and give my body a little more time to prepare and hopefully have a less stressful labor. But going to 42 weeks scares me.

  • I had an appointment at 40 weeks and now am going 2x a week... i have appointments scheduled through 41 weeks, so I assume that at the 41 week appt. they'll schedule the induction.  In previous discussions they've said I can go to 42 weeks if all is going well according to the NSTs and u/s.

  • My midwife told me, since I'm a FTM, if I make it to 41 weeks they will check the baby out to make sure it's still OK.  But they won't induce until 42 because she says that especially with FTM, inductions often fail unless you are pretty dilated because your body has never done it before.
