Trouble TTC

2ww after injectables - alcohol?

For the first time in our ttc journey, I am going to ovulate!! (Have hypothalamic amennorrhea).  I have been on Clomid & injectables (Menopur), and I took ovidrel this AM.  Tomorrow we BIO & then wait the 2 weeks.

My question is about alcohol.  I have a few events coming up in the next few weeks that I will be with friends who are drinking & want to know if I should partake (I'm talking about maybe a drink on Cinco de Mayo, for example).  I am usually in the "drink 'til it's pink" boat since I know a baby (if there is one) does not really get any nutrients from the mom right away, but with everything I've been through, certainly don't want to risk it.  Thoughts?

My TTC Journey:
Dx: Hypothalamic amenorrhea / mild PCOS (Pretty much a hormone/ovulatory disorder)
Progesterone to induce period w/ the goal of Clomid - never got period (September 2011). Referred to RE.
Femera - never responded to the meds (December 2011)
Clomid with TI - BFN (February 2012)
Injectables (Menopur) - hyperstimulated/canceled (March 2012)
Injectables #2 (Menopur) with TI- BFN (May 2012)
IVF - OHSS (transfer canceled), but 11 frozen! (June 1012)
FET - 1 transferred on 8/09/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 350.3; Beta#2: 365; Beta#3: 157. Biochemical pregnancy.
FET # 2 - 1 transferred on 11/01/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 337; Beta#2: 769. BFP!!! 1st ultrasound 11/28/12 showed heartbeat, but measuring 5 days behind. 2nd ultrasound 12/05/12 - miscarriage.
FET # 3 - 1 transferred on 1/24/13. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): BFN.
FET # 4 - 2 transferred on 3/21/13.  Bet #1 (11dp5dt): 660; Beta#2: 1,300.  Miscarried at home @ 6 weeks.

FET # 5 - 2 transferred on 7/12/13.  Beta #1 (10dp6dt): BFN.
Attempted an IUI in late August 2013, but didn't respond well.
IVF #2 with PGS - Stims started 10/28 with retrieval on 11/11.  Of 14 mature eggs, 10 fertilized, 4 made it to Day 5 & 1 made it to Day 6. We did PGS on the Day 5 embryos, and 3 of 4 were normal. Had ET on 11/17. Beta #1 (8dp6dt): 203. Beta #2 (10dp6dt): 618. We since had two ultrasounds & on 12/19, our RE released us to the OB.  On 1/02/14, we had our first ultrasound with the OB where we heard the heartbeat.  We are so thankful for the blessing & crossing every finger & toe for a healthy & successful pregnancy.

Re: 2ww after injectables - alcohol?

  • My first IUI I didn't drink at all. This IUI I had a half a glass of wine while at a convention and then this past weekend had another half a glass of wine a festival. I think having 1 drink would be fine, but def not downing shots.

  • Also, what about the other pregnancy foods, like cold deli meat.  Is that a no-no?

  • I personally wouldn't worry about a glass or so during the TWW and the pregnancy foods?  I hadn't even thought about it.  So I wouldn't worry about those either.

    Good luck!!!

  • As many women on here have said, as well as many docs - Drink til its pink. Even a glass of wine early on wont damage a fetus. Of course its not recommended you do so, but you arent go to m/c or have birth defects by drinking one glass. As too the 2ww, there's no way it coud affect it unless you get flat out smashed.

And I have never even heard of deli meat being a no-no. That sounds kind of crazy. I tend to stay away from most of it because I don't like processed foods period, but I will buy Boards Head and other brands because when I look at it I can actually tell what it is.

  • I will probably be in the midst of my 2ww for my 30th bday. Husband is taking me away to the beach to celebrate. I will def be having a drink(s).  :)

Hinessn: It's common for people not to eat cold deli meat during pregnancy (though I think it is okay if you heat it up).  I personally wouldn't stress during 2ww, though.

  • It's really a personal choice.  If you have a drink or two, it's probably not a big deal.  My choice is that I've put some much money and time into this process that I don't want to do anything that could potentially jeopardize a pregnancy.  If the cycle fails, I can't say "I shouldn't have had that drink!"

  • I agree that one drink or so is probably fine. I've had a half a glass of wine here and there during the 2ww. If you are going to worry about it, I would avoid it altogether.

The risk with deli meat is from listeria, a bacteria that causes food poisoning. It can also be found in unpasteurized soft cheeses. I think pregnant women are something like 20 times more likely to contract it, and it can cause m/c or severe harm to the fetus. So you could eat deli meat for a whole pregnancy and be totally fine, or you could eat it once and get sick. (You can also cook it until steaming to be safe. I would assume you could then cool it back down again and put it on a sandwich.)

Being a sort-of-vegetarian, I don't eat deli meat, but I do avoid sushi and soft cheeses during the 2ww. Mainly b/c if I don't, I am just going to worry about it.
