High-Risk Pregnancy

New here with a question about Enbrel

Hello ladies! I am currently 6 weeks pregnant with our first and it took awhile ( info in siggy)! I also have Type 1 diabetes that is very well controlled so right now that is not a problem thank goodness! I also have ankylosing spondylitis and I have great control using Enbrel 25mg once every 2-3 weeks. I stopped my Enbrel at my rheumatologists instruction about 8 weeks ago. I have been doing fairly well but the last week has been very rough. I have had days where if I sneeze it bring tears to my eyes. I have had a lot of trouble walking and my hubby had to actualy carry me to the bathroom last night. My doc does not want me to take Enbrel again untill my 2nd tri but I cant make it another 6 weeks like this. I am also an RN and work 12 hour shifts, so that doesn't help. I am switching to a part time 8 hour shift in 5 weeks. The research I have been able to do about Enbrel and pregnancy has me feeling ok to start again. Has anyone here stayed on Enbrel during pregnancy? Steroids are not an option for me because of diabetes.  TIA! Sorry that got so long!

Re: New here with a question about Enbrel

  • I actually have no experience with this. Usually autoimmune and rheumatologic diseases get better during pregnancy, but probably not when you go cold turkey on your meds! Here's what I would do. I'd gather up the info you've found on enbrel in pregnancy and make a STAT appointment with your rheumatologist. Let him/her know what's happened since you came off your meds and see if you can come to a solution. My rheum is super great about this stuff. Fortunately, my Sjogrens is mild and hasn't bugged me. I cannot imagine how you're feeling!

  • I have A/S too but not bad enough for enbrel. But I had to go off all medications during both pregnancies. Ultimately you'll have to get your OB and rheumy to consult. Good luck!
