Sort of a GTKY: let's talk nurseries!

We are finding out the sex at our a/s the beginning of May, so it's really getting me excited about picking out a nursery theme. I see a lot of you are finding out as well, so it's making me think about what everyone else is dreaming about...

1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

I've really only thought about girl ideas since I'm convinced I'm having a girl. I'm prepared either way, but I really want to do owls for a little girl with aqua and pink as the main colors.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

Basically, I'm drawing inspiration from this nursery: https://www.chiccheapnursery.com/2010/real-rooms/nursery-ideas-whimsy-owl-themed-nursery-for-baby-girl/

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

I think DH doesn't really care... he trusts me and generally likes my choices.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

We'll probably buy a few things here and there after we move the end of June. I'll gradually set things up probably around August when it's hot and I'll be staying inside in the A/C and nesting :)

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

$1000 tops. A lot of our things we can reuse from DS since we're using the same color furniture (i.e. the glider, changing table.)

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?  We are finding out the sex, but are still doing a gender neutral nursery with the Berenstain Bears as the theme.  I know some people are totally against baby themed nurseries, but I figure they're only a baby once.  When they are a little older and you know their personality you can decorate differently.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?  I think the theme is pretty self explanatory.

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?  DH is just as excited as I am about the nursery.  About a month ago he was already asking me if we should've already painted the nursery by now.  I assured him that there is plenty of time to take care of the nursery!

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?  We were going to BRU on Monday to start making a registry and looking at their baby furniture.  Don't know when we're going to pull the trigger though...maybe after the A/S??

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture? We don't have a budget set, but I love a good sale, so won't be going crazy.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

Don't know what we are having, but I decided the nursery colors long before we were pregnant.  Yellow and gray with black and white accents and furniture.  The yellow is really bright/dark, not pastel.  Painted the room last September.  No "themes" though. Maybe a piece of art, mobile, or stuffed animal but not everywhere in the room and not in the fabric.  I might throw in a whale, crab, or matryoshka doll or two.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

Some ideas are pinned in my Pinterest under "nursery" (link in sig).  Have only painted the walls and picked out all pieces of furniture except for the dresser/changing table (cribs & wardrobe).  I've pinned rugs and some artwork.

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

All up to me since I am an interior designer and DH has no design sense whatsoever.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

Hopefully next paycheck we will start buying the furniture.  It is all Ikea so we'll need to put it together and I want to do that while I still can help out DH.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

Low budget for furniture and everything in nursery.  I am making all things cloth (curtains, bedding, diaper bag, plus CDs, and 50% of maternity clothes).  Other items will be a higher budget (stroller, car seat, and high chair) because of either quality or design.

Honestly, if we were having only one baby, I would go high end on the crib and dresser (Restoration Hardware Baby).  The dresser could be used in a future guest bedroom and I love the crib so much it would be my splurge.  But then the stroller would be a lot lower cost (for a single instead of a double ~$500 difference) and make up the difference for the crib.  Ahhh, the joys of spending for two!  LOL

We're team green. I'm still throwing things around. The guest room that will be baby's is a pretty medium bright green. I'm think of painting it gray though and using pops of bright colors. If we stick with the green, then green, brown, white and aqua (with pink or lavendar added if it's a girl)

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas? Link below!

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you? H does all the construction stuff, closets, crown moulding, refinishing floors, etc. The design is up to me.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up? We're using DS's crib and changing table. When I finalize my color scheme I'll pick out fabrics to do the bedding & window covers, then get a rug.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture? No furniture so for fabric, rug, wall hangings (my sister is a graphic artist, so she's doing all the wall art as a gift) I'm going to say under $150.

Here's the link to the sibling post this week, where I posted pictures of the kids' rooms.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors? We had a chocolate, white, and mint nursery with Tyler, and if it's a boy, we'll reuse all that stuff. If it's a girl, I'll replace all the chocolate colored things with pink, and we'll paint the walls pink, and add some girly touches (like a lamp, nightlight, and some of the things on the shelves). We didn't really want a "theme" last time, and we feel the same way this time.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas? No, but I'll PIP our nursery when it's done for y'all!

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you? I said "we" above like DH did any decision making, but he didn't, nor will he with this one. He leaves the decorating for everything to me (except the man cave downstairs.. I'm not allowed down there =) ).

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up? We already have most of the furniture for the nursery because Tyler got a bedroom set for his big boy room. I'll start purchasing anything else I need after I know whether it's a boy or girl.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture? I don't really have a budget, but I don't really shop anywhere where I know I might be able to get an item cheaper somewhere else. I avoid BRU and BBB, and start at Target and Kohls.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

Our nursery will be medieval themed, with castles, dragons, etc.  We don't know what we are having yet, but it will pretty much be the same no matter which gender, with different colors.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

We just got started, but so far, we have these ideas: https://pinterest.com/anitahavel/pintsize-powell/

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

My husband came up with the theme and is making multiple items for the nursery himself, including a castle tower lamp and a mobile with flying dragons.  We are going to knit a castle baby blanket together.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

We are buying a house in July, so the nursery will be our first "new house" project.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

We hope to stay under $1000 for all baby-related items.  My dad is actually building some of the furniture (with my husband's help, so it will be custom.  Our crib will have a changing table built in, and they are building a castle bookshelf.  They are also building a rocking chair for the nursery.  Most of that budget will go to a travel system and a playpen and other big-ticket items.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors? Not really I sort of know what colors I like in general. But haven't really looked in earnest.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas? Nope

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you? Anytime I bring up anything baby related (names, nursery, registry) he says it's too early and we have plenty of time to figure it out

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up? I will make decisions and put up registry items prior to July, but we're moving at the end of July. So, we won't make many purchases until after we move that way we don't have to move cross country with us.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture? Haven't really decided on one yet probably when we make more choices on the registry we'll figure it out.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

We are Team Green. Our nursery colors are light green and light yellow accents (mostly in gingham). I'll be sewing the crib skirt and quilt and I've already sewn the curtains.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

My in-laws bought our crib yesterday, though it won't be delivered for another three months or so. This is our crib! https://www.pali-design.com/index.php?section=products&subsection&page=products&product_serie_id=28&product_id=228&product_photo_id=540&langue=en&view=photo_display

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

DH tore up the entire room and refinished it. He took off paneling (ew!), drywalled, took up all the existing flooring and had carpet installed.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

We're working on it a little bit at a time. I look for great deals and wait until the pieces that I want are on sale and then I grab them up.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

    Ugh, I don't know.

  • 1) Nursery theme/colors - Unsure on colors officially, but I'm planning on white furniture and neutral paint for the room.  We'll use pictures and bedding to bring in color.  Right now, I'm liking a green or yellow and grey combo and maybe a zoo animal theme.

    2)  PIPs or links?  See below

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?  I gave DH free reign to do whatever he wants to the garage and basement, as long as I can have full control over the nursery.  He seems fine with that.  : )

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?  I found a great deal on a glider/rocker on craigslist, so that was our official first purchase for the baby this weekend.  I'm going to begin painting the nursery in the next few weeks and then we'll start buying furniture and other things after our A/S on May 25th.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture? I think we can stay under $600 for furniture (planning to purchase it all from Ikea).  I'd like a big rug of some sort.  I think total we can stay under $800 for the nursery.

  • 1) we are finding out in three weeks but plan on decorating the same way regardless perhaps with some accents relating to the baby's sex

    2) we want either a blue or gray nursery with white stencils. We have a white IKEA crib and plan on doing an IKEA dresser / changing table as well.  Maybe something like this but without the modern chair (don't find that practical). Hopefully my artistic MIL can help since we are sort of hopeless.

    3) He more has veto power and offers light suggestions. This is true in most aspects of our relationship.

    4) Already started buying stuff. Plan on doing heavy set up and decorating around 20-30 weeks.

    5) I don't know. Maybe around $1200? We are going to get a nice chair that is probably $500, $400 for crib/dresser/changing table, $300 for accents? We will spread costs out over time.

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?

If we have a boy, we are doing a rock and roll themed room. Red and black with some of DH's favorite vintage records hanging on the walls and some older tour posters. For a girl, we are planning a Paris themed room, with black and white lace details and perhaps pink walls, maybe beige with a pink accent wall.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?

Yes! He is very involved...we talk about it constantly.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?

As soon as we find out the sex of the baby, which should be May 12th if baby cooperates!

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?

About $1000, we are being given a bassinet and a PNP, DH works at a furniture store, so we are getting the crib, etc. at book value price!

  • 1) If you know what you're having (or even if you don't and have something in mind for a boy and girl), have you decided on the nursery theme/colors?
We're almost certainly Team Blue but I've picked a theme that will work for either gender since Baby#3 will be sharing a room with my daughter (and her red and pink scheme isn't going to work). The walls will be a light Robins Egg blue with red, gold, black, white, and yellow accents. We're trying to stay vintage or at least vintage-inspired.

    2) Do you have PIPs or links to your ideas?
    This is my primary inspiration:
    https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/daphnes-enchanting-glamorous-nursery-168258
With a few ideas from here too (minus the pink):
    https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/viviens-happily-nostalgic-nurs-151179

    3) Does DH/SO taking an interest in designing the nursery or is it up to you?
Not really. I always run my idea boards and inspiration pictures by him, but decorating isn't really something that interests him.

    4) When will you start making purchases for the nursery and start setting it up?
I plan on painting as soon as my nausea passes for good. Lol! After that it will just be piece by piece as I have the time and money to get stuff done.

    5) What kind of a budget are you trying to stick to for everything, including furniture?
We really don't plan out a budget in advance. I just try to spend as little as possible. This baby doesn't really need much except his space in the bedroom and clothes so I guess have a little extra money to play with. Still, we'll try to keep it to a couple hundred.
