Whoops! Ordered a sandwitch...

And had to pull off all the sprouts. Forgot you can't eat those while pregnant. Then got weirded out by the raw mushrooms (can't remember if those are not allowed either?) and pulled them off too.

I have my old prenancy book and it goes through all that, and I guess I need to sit down and study again. :(:(

  • I hate that sprouts of off-limts...I love them!  Although I haven't had them for a while because most places don't even serve them anymore due to the e.coli outbreak.

    Sprouts are risky for even non-pg people because the way they grow and the fact that they're tough to wash makes them highly susceptible to e-coli.  

    Hate to further rain on the parade but if you had lunchmeat or tuna/chicken salad on your sandwich they're also no-nos.  My OB said all my lunchmeat has to be eaten straight from the package right after opening or microwaved until steaming to kill listeria.  I've been wanting a cold turkey sandwich with avocado and sprouts since I got knocked up. ):

     Everything in moderation. You can have lunch meat don't freak out the poor girl further. Tons of expecting women eat lunch eat and they are just fine.

    I've had about 2lbs of chicken salad in the past two weeks-

    -and it was DELISHIOUS.

    ITA with Milesc. I ate lunch meat and had no problems. Also never heard of no chicken/tuna salad. My dr. just said limit tuna to about once a week.

  • The general rule that I go by is that if there haven't been any outbreaks of listeriosis reported recently (in my area or in places that receive meat processed in the same place), lunch meat is totally safe. Listeria doesn't just appear out of thin air, being that it is bacteria, it was present there in the first place, and not all risky foods automatically have listeria on/in it they are just more likely to carry it.

    Obviously it's better safe than sorry, but I wouldn't sweat it too much if you happen to ingest something that is considered "risky" but were unaware it could be riddled with listeria.

In Canada at least, it's regulated so that the packaged stuff is not allowed to be sold unpasteurized, and generally restaurants (chains are pretty much guaranteed to do this) will be using pre-packaged feta so you're good! I love feta, especially when I'm pregnant... omnomnom.

    Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

    FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
  • My OB said lunch meat is totally fine - just don't eat it if it's expired (duh) or you're at a place that doesn't seem to reputable or clean.  
    Tuna, limit to once or twice a week.  Don't stress yourself out too much!

    EDIT: And as for chicken/tuna salad, this is referring to stuff that's pre-made at restaurants and sits around - even in the fridge.  If you make it fresh at home using canned meat, obviously it's ok.

     

    I definitely don't need a new OB, but thanks.  My first baby was born very healthy, and so was I during my entire pregnancy.  The above is a recommendation, not the end-all.  MY OB, who I trust to keep me and my baby healthy, who has already done so with me once already, says I can have lunch meat every once in a while.  

    SO, here's the lesson ladies.... don't believe everything you hear, and listen to YOUR OB.  You picked him/her because you trust them.  Every person has an opinion, and you will drive yourself nuts if you listen to everything you hear or read.  Go with your gut, and with what you have been advised by YOUR doctor.

    Same here... My OB said if you want a sandwich to eat a sandwich!  Just don't eat it every meal for a week ;)  Anything.. .well almost anything (certain fish, etc) in moderation!

     I have seen this posted on this board several times already.  To be completely honest I think everyone is just trying to freak everyone out!  Especially the 1st time mommies!  If you are really that set on freaking people out you can find just about any report claiming that practically EVERYTHING is bad for you to eat and might cause cancer, illness, etc!  Also when some people worry about PB the only person I know that cut it out of her diet while pg her daughter is deathly allergic to the stuff!  I honestly don't think eating it while pg is going to affect if your child is allergic to it or not!
