Does Eczema mean LO will have allergies?

Gabe's got it, pretty bad.  H and I both have allergies (me worse than H).  I'll talk to pedi about it when we go to our 1 year appt.  I know there is a correlation.  But I wasn't sure if it was 100%.

  • I've heard it increases the chances they will.  DS had it this winter and has little patches on his face right now.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • It could be related but it's not a for sure thing. My sister has very sensitive skin and gets eczema all the time (more so when she was younger) but she has no allergies. I have allergies but never had eczema.

  • I don't know either but I hope not.  LO has eczema, no allergies so far....  DH and I have no allergies.  And no eczema.

  • Google it. I'm kidding. I have seen you answer that to others before, and it was the first thing that popped in my head. Incouldnt hold back. But in all seriousness, Inhave found documented in several places that the food allergies/triggers are only linked to about 1/3 of eczema patients. That is the most common number I saw, but I did see up to 1/2 documented as well. A large percentage of kids outgrow eczema by their second birthday. However, my unfortunate guess with a family history of allergies is that Gabe my be slightly higher at risk. For asthma as well. Have you noticed any sensitivities to any food yet? Have doctors mentioned anything to you about allegy testing? I don't know if this is something they address in babies, especially with eczema, or if it is something they only address once a food sensitivity is noticed.

I did google it.  It has info about both sides (yes it means they'll have allergies, and no it is just super common in babies).

I have asthma and allergies, and H has allergies.  So I know he is at risk.  I also have eczema, but it very rarely flares. It is really hard to tell what is eczema, what is teething, and what is friction burn (from him barrel rolling every and rubbing his cheeks on the floor).

He's got no sensitivities to food.  He had PB for the first time today, and nothin'.  That said, H and I aren't allergic to food either.  The only "food" I am allergic to is MSG.

  • Our pedi said if your baby has Eczema, they have a greater risk of developing asthma later. He also said that eczema can be the result of an allergy much like hives, and outbreaks can be from LO eating something they have a mild allergy to. I once washed DS's clothes in our lavender detergent, and all his usual eczema spots flared up big time. IDK if that means he's allergic or not.

  • Yes, but I think the correlation that my allergist told me was eczema or a rash before 4 months of age was an allergy indicator...
