3rd Trimester

So.... I've gained 50+ lbs.

I literally haven't weighed myself this entire pregnancy, so it was a bit of a shock today to get on the scale and realize I've gained about 51 lbs! My doctor doesn't do weigh-ins unless she's concerned, and I don't have a scale at home - so for fun (ha!) I stepped on a scale at a friend's house this morning..... And I kinda wish I hadn't.

I was fairly slim to begin with (5'6" and 125 lbs), but still.... I wish I had been monitored throughout so I could have maybe stopped from gaining so much. My health is good, my blood pressure is low/normal, no GD or other health issues, and people generally tell me I look "small." But again, 50+ lbs seems like a very intimidating number!!!!

I gained about 40 lbs with my DD and it all came off pretty easily in the first 4 months (thanks breastfeeding!), but I doubt I'll be this lucky this time around.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: So.... I've gained 50+ lbs.

  • I'm petite too and I have gained 38-40 ( I've lost in my last two appointments a pound a week) . My BMI was classified as " underweight" pre-pregnancy so my OB put me on weight gain during 1-2nd trimesters. Don;t worry Mamam! I bet you lose it all just as easy with DD!!!

  • Me too, I was 5'6", 125 at the beginning. I have gained 40-something lbs, I am sure it will be 50 by the time I hit 40 weeks. My doctor hasn't said anything.

  • *sigh* this is me. At my weekly OB appt last night my dr had informed that I had gained five pounds since my other appointment 9 days prior. They seemed shocked. I was shocked. Where did all that weight come from?? Maybe I had eaten more than I thought during the easter holidays?

I originally weighed 136 pre-pregnancy at 5'8'' but I've gained 41 pounds so far. My blood pressure, which is usually low, was up, but not dangerously so, just up for me.They also kept asking me if I had noticed any swelling in my hands or feet. but, no. Otherwise, I'm pretty healthy/ They want to keep monitoring me though and say if my blood pressure goes up to the point where I get headaches or start seeing spots I may have to be induced. which is a scary thought. So for now, I'm really trying to watch my blood pressure and especially what I eat from now on.

  • I love this post! I just got home from my appointment; I am up 45 pounds today, and almost breaking 200 (199.4 is NOT 200, right?). I am 5'8 and had a very athletic build prepregnancy.  I've never been "skinny," but i have always been fit and very active. My MW said that some women just gain a lot, but not to worry about it.  I don't feel big except in my belly, and my maternity pants are still fitting the same except around my waist, so I'm trying to just accept it.

Here's hoping breast feeding is the miracle weight loss program so many moms claim it to be!!

  • I was 5'7" and 145 lbs, now, (at 34 weeks) 197 lbs.... Les sigh.  I got stretch marks on my butt before I got any on my belly. However, my doctor says everything looks fine, and so does my husband, and that's all that really matters. On the other hand, I cried when I bought a pair of size 10 jeans....
  • I did that with my last pregnancy. So this time I've been trying to watch it. That gain can come on so fast!

I've gained lots of weight.  This is my first pregnancy and all I've been craving are hamburgers and sweets.  I'm up 55+ lbs and am so ashamed!  I cant wait to get to working out again and losing all this weight!

  • I gained approx. 50 with all of my pregnancies.  Took it all off in a reasonable amount of time, so I am not terribly concerned.  Babies were all in the large 8-9 lbs range, but also 41 weeks.  I read somewhere that women generally gain about the same amount of weight with all of their pregnancies and it is just kind of the way their body naturally does it.  I can buy that one.  I ate tons of carbs and cookies with my first and gained 50.  I hate tons of veggies and fruit with my second and gained 50.  This time around I am edging closer to 60, but I am kind of attributing that to the fact that they had me on no exercise for the first half of my pregnancy.  I am literally 1 lbs away from hitting the 200 lbs mark so I told the nurse today at my weigh in that baby had to come this week!!  I refuse to pass that mark:)  I'm 5'6" too, btw.

  • Im almost there, I think im somewhere around 47lbs but I will defiantly hit 50 before I deliver. I gained alot with my first son and lost it all so im not too worried. It would be different if I was living in the drive through window but im not. This time around my doctor is completely fine with it and my blood pressure is great and no GD so no worries here.

  • I will be up about 40 by the time I deliver. I am 5'3" and started at 175. I am now at 214. I definitely cannot wait to lose this baby weight, and more!

  • Thank you for posting, seriously! I was 5'9'' and 125lbs prepregnancy. At 32 weeks I'm now 160lbs and still have 8 weeks to go. I'm just now moving up one pants size which I guess isn't bad (and I keep lying to myself that it's swelling lol). My mum was 5'2'' and 100lbs and went up to 155lbs with each pregnancy, even with watching what she ate. She said she lost the weight fairly quickly. She's a nurse and says the recommended weight gain is just guidelines. Some women will only gain 10lbs while others will gain 60. It's in your genes and there is little you can do about it.

  • I've gained 47 with this one but gained 64 with my DS so I'm not too upset about it!  It'll come off.  Some Women gain a lot when pregnant - some don't.  GL!

  • Wow, these posts make me feel SO MUCH BETTER!

I am small, 5'0 and was 129 when I got pregnant- a perfect weight for my height and super in shape from the gym. Now I have gained 40+ lbs and I feel MASSIVE.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one :)

  • I gained 55 lb with DS and no one batted an eye. I LOVE your provider's stance. This is more of a MW stance, so it is great to see an OB also take it.  Health is about so much more than a number on the scale. Since you are otherwise healthy and made reasonably healthy choices, it sounds like your body gained what it needed to gain.
  • O_o My mom gained 60 lbs when she was pregnant with me, but that was 27 years ago.

I thought the typical recommendation for pregnancy weight gain was about 25 lbs? I'm not judging, I just thought that was something doctors monitored in everyone.

But I'm diabetic and was overweight when the pregnancy started, so I've only gained 8 lbs and am weighed CONSTANTLY. lol

  • I gained 50 with my first, and am up 48 so far with this one (2 weeks left).  I started this one off 15 lbs less than my first.  I talked to my OB about it because I was upset because I worked so hard after the first, and ran a marathon last May.  He isn't concerned.  He said that some women just gain more, and it is very hard to gain less than what mother nature has in store for you.  He said as long as you aren't hanging out at Culver's every day, he's not concerned.  Could I have watched my diet better, probably some, but I'm not eating everything in sight either.  I'm looking forward to running again and getting my shape back.
  • With my first, I gained 50 lbs but I do believe that a lot of it was water weight since I was horrendously swollen toward the end.  Baby was due August 30, but came a few days late in September.  Before pregnancy (both times) I was 5'9 and 135 lbs.  My theory is that when you start out a little on the lighter side, your body gains more because it needs the extra stores to nourish the baby.  This time, I'm up 28 lbs and am hoping to gain only 10 more, but I'm honestly okay if I do end up with a larger weight gain.  I took it all off within 4 months, but I was down to with 5 after two months.  I think honestly, my body held onto the last few pounds because I was nursing.  Anyway, it will come off! Just keep doing what you're doing because you're doing great!

  • I'm 2 lbs shy of a 50 lb gain as of yesterday.  I'm sure by the time he makes his arrival I'll have crested that 50 lb mark.  Could I have eaten a bit better, exercised more and kept a better handle on things?  Probably.  But I'm currently 25 lbs over my all time high and I look nothing like I did then, so I'm confident I'll be able to bounce back.

  • I'm at 49 lbs gained and still growing. Sigh. It's frustrating to think about how hard I worked before getting pregnant to lose 50 lbs, now I have gained it all back (and by the time baby is here it will be even more!) I eat pretty healthy (giving into temptation everyone once in a while) ... I just keep telling myself, it's all okay, it's for a good reason. Doctor has not said anything about it yet. Here's hoping that breastfeeding will help me lose a lot of it :) Good luck!

  • I was up 37 with 8 weeks left, so I'll probably be weighing in up around 45 lbs. This post is so helpful! I could certainly have worked out more & ate better, but I wasn't lazy & didn't eat poorly. Most of my weight gain was weeks 16-20 when I had to eat carbs really frequently to keep from getting sick. I'm excited to get in shape after baby & lose the weight.

  • I didn't read through all the responses so sorry if I am being repetitive. I gained 50 lbs with DD (I started out at 5'3" and 130 lbs). I lost 30 lbs in the first 2-3 weeks since a ton of it was fluid (and baby, placenta, etc. obviously...but mostly water weight). I exclusively breastfed and most of the rest came off very quickly as well.

I hung on to the last 10 lbs until she was 1 because I didn't want to compromise my supply by cutting out calories or hitting the gym too hard. Honestly, a few of those pounds were probably in my boobs too! After she was done nursing at just over a year, I lost the last 10 and then some in just over a month. You will be fine but I understand the panic. I freaked out when I saw the scale read 180 the day before I delivered! haha

I didn't eat well or get any exercise when I pregnant with DD. This time around I am much more active because I'm chasing after DD and going on lots of walks with her, and I have no choice but to cook "real meals" for her so I'm eating a little better this time too (although still snacking a lot at night). I have gained about 30 lbs (at almost 37 weeks) but I have this fear that I'm going to blow up in the next few weeks since I gained 30 out of the 50 lbs in my third trimester last time. Yikes!

I think 25-35 is the standard recommendation for someone with an average BMI, but it is just that: a recommendation. It's not always something you can control.
