Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Please if anyone can help me with HCG Levels... Still pregnant??

Please if anyone can offer advice.  The nurse said my dr. doesn?t return tomorrow to call me back!!!!

Was in hospital all of Sunday with terrible hemmorighing (sp?sorry) for 6-7 hours? The ultrasound did not pick anything up.  My hcg levels came back at 3,000.  They figured I was 5 weeks along.

Had blood test yesterday (2 days after hospital) and nurse called me today to say my hcg level went up to 60,000!!!! How could that be??  Nurse could not give me advice and dr. not back til tomorrow?

Now I am thinking I lost a twin and maybe there is another baby?

Please if anyone knows anything about hcg levels increasing so much after a m/c diagnosis?????  THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Are you sure it's not 6000? 60,000 is completely abnormal growth.

And with HCG's at 3000 they should have seen something.

  • Maybe a possible ectopic?

I had high hcg after a d&c but it turned out the Dr. missed the tissue, so I was still pregnant.  At first when then pathology report came back with no fetal tissue found the doctor was concern it was ectopic.  I had lots of blood draws, a pelvic exam, and an ultrasound (which they saw that the sac was still there).

  • You could have placenta that has not passed. That happened to me, even though i passed the baby my levels didn't drop until after i had a D&C to remove remaining placenta. Hope they figure out whats going on.

I agree. It doesn't make sense. I've never heard of that kind of increase in two days no matter how many babies there might be.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I really do think that someone gave you wrong numbers though. Either the 3,000 was actually 30,000 or the 60,000 should have been 6,000. If you talk to your doctor and get the same information then I'd definitely demand they do a retest. Something doesn't sound right.

  • Thank you.. I swear I think the nurse said 60,000 but maybe she said 16,000. I was so shocked she called out of the blue to say my levels had risen so much.  this is so unreal. I wish she never called.  Just need to talk to the doctor.

Thank you all for responses.  Gosh, I hope not more tissue remaining.  Such a nightmare.

  • I'm sorry for what you are going through. For what it's worth my levels were over 28000 with a missed m/c. Your levels can rise even during a m/c.

  • I hate to say it but the super high numbers sound like a possible molar or other trophoblastic 'disease'.  Either way, I am so, so sorry!!  I totally understand the frustration and difficulty of going through something so traumatic and then having it not really be over... My HCG has been up and down over 13 (THIRTEEN) draws.  it's like the nightmare that never ends.  My highest was around 3k, though, so a different scenario than it sound like for you.

I really hope you get some answers and SOON!  It is crazy that you have to wait - can't another doctor interpret your results?  Good luck to you ...

  • Thanks everyone so much.

Turns out the nurse that called me with results was a moron.  My dr. confirmed my levels DID drop from 3,500 to 1,000.  She said all is happening as normal now and retest in 2 weeks.  I no longer feel pg.  The sore boobs, extreme hunger...everything gone.  except the belly bloat.

To XV- thank you so very much.  I had never heard of a molar pg'cy and that was really freaking me out when I researched it the other day.  My God, the things I never knew.

I am so sorry you are going through that. Can they offer any explanation for the fluctuating numbers?  I didn't want to test again yesterday-- told dr. I will wait 2 weeks.  Can take up to 6 weeks to get down to 5 or 0.  I thought maybe twins since hcg came back high at time of early miscarriage, and the excessive blood loss but dr. said there is such a high range and no way of telling.   I wish you the best of luck.  Keep posting.

  • Phew!!  What a huge relief!  And what a frickin' crazy scenario with the nurse.  What the heck was she looking at?!

Regarding molar pregnancy... yeah I had never heard of it until I had issues, and would have been happy to never have heard of it as long as I lived.  :-<   So glad you aren't dealing with anything like that and hopefully you can move forward.

For me, they said the pre-placental tissue can be quite tenacious stuff, but even then my hcg pattern is "highly unusual".  There's nothing on the ultrasounds though, and I will be getting a 2nd round of MTX to finish off whatever is lingering -- hopefully!
