changing table vs. bookshelf

I have one small wall in the nursery that I had planned to put a bookshelf against.  I was going to skip the changing table and just use the top of the dresser.  Well after measuring, I think the nursery will be a bit tight with a long, low dresser.  So I am going to do a tall dresser instead, too tall to put a changing pad on.  I am also planning on doing pretty much a whole wall of floating shelves.  So I think there would be plenty of shelving in the room.

So would you replace the planned bookshelf with a changing table?  Cost isn't really an issue cause I would get the Ikea Gulliver, which is $70.  Or have no changing table at all and use the wall for some other purpose?  I don't know what else I would put there though...

Re: changing table vs. bookshelf

  • We put a changing pad on the dresser, and DS has *never* had his diaper changed on it. Not once. I am so glad I didn't waste the money on an actual changing table.

I went to Home Goods and bought a few cute baskets to keep in each room as little diaper stations and that worked out so much better for us. I stocked each basket with a little changing pad, diapers, wipes, cream, and a toy or two and we've been good to go for the last 2 years.

I think you should keep your original idea of the bookshelf :)

  • No, skip the changing table and do the bookshelf instead.  I have a changing pad on top on a dresser and I stopped using it when DS was about 7 months old because he rolls around so much.  Most of our diaper changes happen on the floor.

That's such a great idea!  I can always do baskets on the bookshelf for extra storage since I doubt he will have enough books to fill an entire all of shelves and a bookcase!

  • We change DS's diaper 95% of the time downstairs on the floor.  We just have a basket with a pad, diapers and wipes in our TV stand.  However, we actually bought this bookshelf from IKEA https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10196431/#/70193745 (we put it horizontally of course) before DS was born and put a changing pad on it.  It totally fits and works great when we do actually change him up there. We were worried it would slip, but the bottom of the pad is rubbery and there was no problem.

But you could easily get away with not having a changing table as long as you don't mind bending down on the floor.

  • My 1st two kids we use dthe change table- but i find they are short.  a mat on a dresser or floor works best.  I dont think we will buy a change table- waste of money

  • My DS is 18 months and we still do every diaper change on his pad which is on top of a low (36" height) long dresser.  Wouldn't have it any other way.
