Projectile vomiting??

We have an appointment on Thursday but just thought I'd get your opinion. Our babies are vomiting at least once a day, one baby more than the other. Breast milk or formula don't seem to matter. It's not just spit up, it's literally everything they've eaten spewing forcefully out of their mouths. I have to bathe them after. afterwards, they are instantly hungry which is frustrating. Is this normal?? Has anyone had a newborn do this and if so, what was the diagnosis/how did you fix it??

Re: Projectile vomiting??

  • Are they burping before they vomit?  Are they spitting up during other feeds?  If it is only once a day then it is probably just spitting up.  If we didn't get a burp from A she would often spit a lot of it back up (sometimes it would seem like almost all of her feed).  If they start projectile vomiting with every feed you need to see you health care provider ASAP.

  • I was thinking reflux. Eliza, who vomits much more, grunts and moans all the time and only gets a sound sleep if I lay her on my chest. She struggles when on her back, even in a reclined position.

  • My son did this too .. he was a preemie and it went on for the longest time! He would throw up everything in his stomach. Then he would be instantly starving again. They had me give him special formula and on a liquid diet for the longest time. I don't know how old your babies are though. Mine was still young but he had this problem until he was about 2 or so. They also told me smaller feeding and more often too ..

Anyhow I wish you and the babies the best!

  • DD had/has this issue since day one. She would looe entire feeds and ended up loosing weight and being hospitalized for it. We are still dealing with it at 8 months. Hopefully it is an easy fix for your LOs.
  • Gibby did that every couple days. At first i was worried it was pyloric stenosis - but since it wasn't every feeding - and he'd go a couple days without doing it- the docs ruled that out (thankfully).

He gained weight fine - so there was no need to medicate for reflux or anything- we just did our best to avoid it - keep him upright after feedings for a wihle- not let his belly scrunch over after eating, etc.  It stopped around 6mo when he started to sit up a bit more.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • It could be reflux or pyloric stenosis. My son has this at 3 weeks old and he had it surgically repaired. No matter what you should take your child to theped!
