If new kid is a boy I really like William. I think it fits really well with the other two (John and Samuel) but still has a nice everyday nickname. We would use Will instead of Bill or Billy. My other two go by Jack and Sam.
I'm not concerned about the NN aspect. Most people don't even know Jack is really a John. (family name on DHs side, but my SF is John and my SB is Johnny) People seem to just repeat whatever you call your kid. But I do like the idea of a more formal given name (if they ever need it) professionally.
Anyway - the silly concern is this. Both my Mother and Sister commented that is would be funny to have a Jack and a Will because of the TV show 'Will and Grace.'
I think this is nuts, that show has been off the air for ages, no one their age would get a W&G reference and it isn't as if I'm naming my kids 'will and grace.'
But, I also don't really watch TV or get a lot of pop-culture references so I figured I would ask:
Does Jack, Sam and Will make you think of an old TV show?
Re: Is this as silly as I think it is?
I think William would be a great addition to your sibset. I wouldn't have thought of the 'Will and Grace' (great show) association if you hadn't mentioned it and I'm a tv/movie/pop culture freak.

I don't think so. I didn't make the connection until you said something. I think that show was one where people either loved it or hated it. I always changed the channel if I saw it on. Plus, Jack isn't the middle son is he? I think that makes it even less of a problem. If Jack was the middle son, I could maybe see something, but I really would not make the connection.
I'd still use it.
I haven't ever seen more than an episode or two of the show, so I would never have thought of that... It's not really a bad connotation, in any case.
If anyone brings it up, you could just mention that your son's formal name is John, so it wasn't a reference or anything. I doubt it will come up much though.
I agree. And it goes well with the other names.

this. no one will remember Will and Grace.
totally a non-issue for me. as you said, that show will be so long gone by the time the kids are old enough to even make such an association that it doesn't matter. besides..there are so many shows out now.
we were considering naming this baby Violet if she's a girl. we have a Charlotte, Private Practice reference be damned!
It would never have occurred to me to think about Will and Grace.
And even now I'm like, "huh. okay."
So I say go for it!

I'm a huge W&G fan and even I don't think much of it. Most people wouldn't put it together.
Btw, I LOVE the name Will.
Did not occur to me and I used to watch the show.
