Table foods and egg question

So, I know that many docs say to avoid egg whites this early, but I have a question... when cooking/baking foods with eggs, is it OK to give LOs some even if made with a whole egg?  For example - I made Spaghetti and Meatballs over the weekend, and really wanted to give Ty a cut up meatball, but I second guessed myself because my meatball recipe uses two eggs.  That's 2 eggs per 2# of ground meat, so very small amount of egg per meatball, so really would that have been OK to give him?  I also want to start making pancakes and stuff over the weekend that we can give him, but generally pancakes are made with egg, and I can assure you I will never get away with vegan cooking or baking with DH!

So, really - is it OK to give LOs at this age foods made with whole egg, of should I hold off and only give him scrambled egg yolks if I want him to eat eggs?

Re: Table foods and egg question

  • Whole eggs in baked products, cooked products = ok

As far as the egg by itself isn't it the white that is ok and the yolk not ok?

From everything I've read it's the white that is what to avoid.  I know some sources also say it's OK to introduce a whole egg this early now, but I tend to err on the side of caution - I'm terrified of an allergic reaction!

It's probably the fact that it's in such small amounts that makes it okay. It's the particular protein in the egg white that can be an allergen. If I were making something specifically for LO, I'd probably just do egg yolks, but I wouldn't worry too much if you've already made something with a whole egg.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.  I have no advice on giving LO eggs to eat (we have not tried) but he has had no issue with waffles, pancakes etc.

  • It is whatever you are ok with. We give lo scrambled whole eggs he loves them. I just watched for a reaction the first few times.

  • Our pedi gave us the go-ahead for basically all foods (except peanut butter, shellfish, and honey) so we've given LO scrambled whole eggs and hard boiled whole eggs. He didn't care for the scrambled ones but gobbled up the hard boiled ones.

  • C's pedi said we can give whole eggs at her 9 month appointment.

Previously I was giving only egg yolks but she said that the new research is saying that earlier exposure may actually be better from the allergen standpoint rather than delayed exposure.
