Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Not rolling over but trying to sit up all the time?

My lovely daughter is 6 months old-  absolutely hates tummy time and is showing no efforts or interest in rolling over but if you sit down in a car seat or the bath seat she will push herself into a sitting position and hold her there for awhile.  At her checkup the doctor was concerned that she wasn't rolling over.. wondering what I can do or should be doing to help her?  We already lightweight force tummy time, although she screams through most of it.. Sorry if this has already been asked. busy mom back at work already..

  • DD is 7 months and refuses to roll over from back to front.  When on belly for tummy time, which she hates, flat out screams, she does roll from belly to back no problem.  We have been working with Early Intervention and she seems to be exhibiting the ability to roll, she's just lazy.  We are doing tummy time in small increments (2-5 minutes) 3-4x within an hour when she is playing and just trying to be more interactive with her.  When she tries to roll out, we were told to try and stop the roll out so she is on her side and realizes this is a position she should try to be in so she can sit by herself.  DD sits unassisted really well, loves to stand and play at the leapfrog table toy and we want to avoid her not learning how to crawl at this stage, since she has some weakness in her arms.  Some babies do walk without crawling and crawl after - but what EI said is that rolling is essential for crawling.

This sounds like my DD.  She won't even attempt to roll from back to front, but can roll from front to back easily.   However, she's been sitting since 6 months and ever since she learned to sit, she doesn't want to do anything else (although she tries to stand, but she's not strong enough to pull herself up yet).   I'm a little worried about her upper body strength so we're going to ask the doctor about it at her 9 month appointment.

  • My son is 6 months old and doesn't roll over either way. At his 6-month appointment I asked the doctor if I should be concerned and he said no, as long as he is reaching his other milestones. I asked if it could be because he's a bigger baby (19.5lbs)...he said that's possible, but it's most likely not happening because he just doesn't want to do it. Didn't know babies could be stubborn so early! Haha

We were told to do tummy time and have her push up as much as possible. Your pedi may recommend some Physical Therapy if it doesn't improve. We are waiting to see if these exercises will help.

  • I did post about that at 6 mos b/c all my LO's boy-friends were/are rolling up a storm while she was/is content to watch them from sitting (or standing).  She can't get herself into those positions yet; impressive that your babe can.  So at 7 mos my LO would sit with confidence and her boy-friends would roll around her.  At near 8 mos my LO rolls a bit, but hardly ever, and makes no attempt to crawl.  But we're all sure she'll be walking early! (while her boy-friends will be crawling up a storm)

  • We had our appointment for ours on Thursday and the pedi said she wouldn't be concerned until they weren't making it by their next appointment, 9 months adjusted age.  Today for the first time ever DS who HATES tummy time rolled over.  Needless to say I was thrilled, and he's now 7 and a half months (adjusted)....milestones seem to be a weird thing of when they meet them, and we as parents worry so much and compare all the time that it's easy to get scared something's wrong.  I would trust the pedi and just keep trying the time.  Our pedi also recommended using the saucer to gain muscle strength that way, obviously for no more than 30 min at a time.

  • I don't have any friends with babies that are the same age but I have a problem with comparing my little one to my oldest daughter.  She was ahead of every milestone and then had a speech delay that sent us to early intervention.  I am trying to play it cool but I get caught up in the worry game every now and again.. THANKS ladies for the reassurance I needed...
  • My DD was constantly wanting to sit at around 5months but hated tummy time for more than 10 seconds. She is now sitting at 6months and rolls from back to tummy but still has some trouble with tummy to back due to she still hates tummy time. I would just give her time :)
