Baby Making Strange Noises While Sleeping

Hey All,

I dont know if this is normal - my 4 week old makes these strange noises while she is sleeping.  When we first put her down she is silent, but after a while she makes these grunting sounds, it almost sounds like she is having difficulty breathing.  The best way I can describe it is she sounds like Gizmo from Gremlins.  Do your babies make noises while sleeping or do they sleep silently?

Re: Baby Making Strange Noises While Sleeping

  • My LO makes all kinds of noises, mostly grunting.  DH and I keep checking on her and she's sleeping away.  She seems to sleep silently during the day when she naps, though...

  • Mine does the same thing, he's 3 weeks.
  • Mine is 5 weeks old and she has been doing the same thing for the last couple of weeks. She makes those sounds and usually it is because she has to pass gas or is trying to poop. It should be fine as long as the sounds they are make aren't choking sounds.

Not to freak you out but DD did this in the hospital (I thought it was cute) and the nurses panicked.  They said those grunting noises can actually be a sign of fluid in the lungs and since she was a c-section baby that wasn't too unusual since they don't get it all squeezed out of them.

I mentioned it to our midwife and she immediately checked his lungs which were clear. Our DS is just a grunting baby which according to her is normal.

  • My son made noises as well when he was that age. The doctor said he may have a small case of gastroesophageal reflux. I looked at my diet and figured out my son was probably sensitive to cow milk proteins. After I cut dairy out of my diet, my son started to sleep more quietly. The doctor also said though that some babies are just noisy ones. It certainly worried me though and my DH had to keep reassuring me everything was fine.

  • Yeah grunting all night long... makes it really hard to sleep with her in the same room... haha...

This. In fact if she hadnt woke me up with her grunting this morning, I would have missed her huge poop and we would have had a huge diaper blowout.

  • I have one of those normal babies. He grunts, squirms, will randomly scream, whimper... all while being completely knocked out. Made for a very tough first few weeks until I got more used to it.

  • My daughter does the exact same thing. She will be 4weeks Monday. The weird thing is she only does it at night. She is perfectly quiet during her naps. What about your son? How long does it last? Another silly question but how do you know when to feed them since they make all these noices and cry sometimes? When their eyes are open and they are continuously crying?

     Thanks!

  • My son is a super noisy sleeper. When he grunts a lot, it's usually because he has to poop or pass gas. But even if he isn't pooping, he's just loud. If you're concerned, ask your pedi to listen to her lungs, but it's not really unusual for babies to make noises when they sleep.
