Cloth Diapering

Cefdinir and CDs

My baby is on his 4th ear infection and amoxicillan isn't working anymore.  They are putting him on Cefdinir.  They say a side effect is that it binds to the iron in his tummy and creates blood red stool which is essentially rust??  I'm thinking this can't be good for the dipes.  Also, I'm reading most babies get a raging, bloody diaper rash from this as well.  GRREEAAATTT.  So I might need the serious diaper rash cream.

Anyway, wondering if I should use my fleece liners or if its better to switch to disposables until this clears up.  Did anyone have their baby on this and use CDs through it?  Did it ruin them?  DId you wash the dipes differently?

Re: Cefdinir and CDs

  • Sorry about your LO's ears :-( I've been down that road far too many times myself. While we have not used Cefdinir, we have used a few other things, and I find that they do stain the diapers, and make them mold VERY easily. Instead of washing daily, I chose to use disposables while on antibiotics. Also, feeding your LO yogurt is supposed to help their digestive system while on the antibiotics, and in turn help prevent the rash. DS1 had 17 ear infections, and we were not told that until about #15; now DS2 has had 4, and luckily we already knew about that. • My LO was on cefdinir, and we used probiotics as we always have with antibiotics. His poop did turn reddish but it was still ploppable. No staining. I definitely recommend giving probiotics!

  • My LO has been on Cefdinir a couple of times.  His poop was definitiely bright, rusty red.  We made sure to feed him a container of yogurt per day, and that really helped to solidify his BMs and prevent diaper rash.  We kept using his CDs with no problems or staining issues.  Yogurt or probiotics of some kind are the key!
