Pregnant after IF

Stopping Metformin at 12 wks..

Hi ladies-

I am supposed to stop my Metformin next week. I was just looking to get advice on anyone who stopped at this time. I am NOT insulin-resistant.

-Did you stop cold turkey or wean?

-Any symptoms after coming off?

-Did OB monitor insulin levels or any special bw after coming off?

-Did you notice anything diff. at all? With you or baby?

Thanks so much!! I am nervous to stop because it feels like a security blanket.

  • Thanks for posting this. I'm not insulin resistant and don't have PCOS but my RE put me on Met as part of my treatment plan. I was a bit curious to see what to expect when I come off it!

  • My RE told me I could stop my Metformin this week.  I was on 1500mg of XR, so 1 pill twice a day.  I wasn't comfortable stopping cold turkey, so when she told me to stop, I went down to 1 pill/day.  I will stop completely the same day I stop progesterone and estrogen supplementation, which is this weekend.  I see my OB next week for the first time, so I will have to wait until then to see how she feels about monitoring Metformin -- but I wasn't insulin-resistant, so I doubt she will want to check much.  So far all I've noticed is less gas!

  • -Any symptoms after coming off? nope, and I just quit cold turkey. I was taking 1500mg XR/day. The MFM told me the reason they don't like to keep you on Met beyond the 1st tri is because it's twice as concentrated in the baby as it is in you.

-Did OB monitor insulin levels or any special bw after coming off? kind of.... I did the glucose test early at 15 weeks ( I ended up with GD, but if I hadn't they would have tested me again at the normal 25ish weeks) This pregnancy I just decided to follow the GD diet from the beginning and I declined the Glucose test.

-Did you notice anything diff. at all? With you or baby? The only thing I noticed was my inability to poop :) I started colace 2x a day after I stopped the Met.

  • I wasn't IR either, and stopped the metformin at 12 weeks.

I stopped cold turkey and felt fantastic after stopping. I feel like the metformin actually made my m/s even worse, because after I stopped taking it, I felt so much better!

I wasn't monitored at all after stopping it and other than feeling better, didn't notice anything different.

    Good luck!!!!

  • I was nervous, too.  I weaned myself off of it, stepping it down by 500 mg each week over three weeks. When I stopped, the first thing I noticed immediately was the lack of stomach upset and frequent trips to the bathroom in the morning.  So that was a welcome change.  Nothing else changed, though.

On a side note, I was insulin resistant and I was scared that when I did my glucose test during my 2nd trimester I would fail big time.  But that wasn't the case.  I passed and everything was fine.

    Good luck.  You'll be fine!

  • I went off at 16 weeks but in retrospect wish I stayed on. Apparently taking it during pregnancy for pcos can help prevent low nmilk supply if you breastfeeding which I ended up having. I wish I knew this so I could do research about it and have it factor in my decision with the metformin.
