I have one from MAC right now, but I think I've heard of some people using baby shampoo - fill up the sink with warm water, add some shampoo, swish around. I was thinking of trying that.

No clue if it's good or not, but I use good old Palmolive. It's super gental, but does the cleaning trick well. I just wet the brush, put some on and work it through the brush, then let it sit for a bit. Rinse well and let it air dry. I don't have any super expensive brushes though, so not sure if it would be good for those.
