I'm also a FTM but I have been doing lots of research and reading on different message boards and it seems like the Chicco Cortina Key Fit 30 gets really good reviews. It looks to have great safety reviews and is part of travel system that seems very functional. Good Luck!!
We chose the Chicco Keyfit 30, too, but we are not doing the travel system, just the carseat which we'll use with the UppaBaby Vista and the Chicco Caddy (for grandma).

This is exactly what I got. It has really good reviews on Consumer Reports. I got the travel system in the "Adventure" style which is a nice shade of green. The color looks nicer in person than it does online.
I had someone help me at Buy Buy Baby last week with strollers and car seats. I've picked out the Baby Jogger City Mini (exactly what we need -- lightweight, folds easily) and the Peg Pereggo Viaggio car seat to go with it. I really liked the safety features it has and it seems like a good investment since I would like to have two more babies. It's pricier at $270, but for safety and quality I don't mind paying a bit extra.
GL in your search. I'm a FTM too and it is very overwhelming as you said! I was glad I had someone who knew the products give me one on one help.

My first choice was the Chicco Keyfit 30, second choice was the Graco Snugride 30. I ended up with the Graco because it was lighter than the Chicco. I'm 100% satisfied with my decision.

I had the Graco Snugride 35 for the last one, which is luckily still good this time around. I love the look of the Chicco but it was really handy to have the carseat last until 35lbs. My DS is a peanut and was able to stay in his infant car seat until he was 1.5. Even then he grew out of it by length WAY before weight. My nephew is a larger baby and outgrew his 25 pound limit car seat by 7 or 8 months. I definitely recommend getting one that fits a larger weight.

We went with the Chico cortina key for 30 I have been playing around with opening and closing the stroller and it's been so easy. Being a ftm I have no one to try it out on yet so I hope it's just as easy with a baby in the picture

Chicco keyfit 30 is the one we are going with, as it has a great rating from consumer reports & my hubby is being a freak about safety (which is fine). The Graco snugride is also rated well but we don't want a graco stroller so we can't get that one. It's best if you decide first on the type of stroller you want, then try to match up with the car seat. For instance, you want a jogging stroller? Then pick the one you want & decide if the car seats that fit are acceptable to you. It's a PIA process so take your time with it & play with the strollers in the store!!! That being said, if you want a travel system, Chicco & Graco are tops (without spending the REALLY big $$$). GL!!

After reading Baby Bargains and the Nurseries & Baby Gear board here, I decided to get the Graco Snugride 30. My second choice was the Chicco Keyfit.

We have the chicco keyfit 30. It's heavy and neither of my boys were in it longer then 8-12wks.I wish we would have gone with the lightweight Graco but we didn't. Also the Graco snugride seem to fit more strollers then the chicco.
If you don't want a travel system (which I don't think are worht it), look at strollers first then figure out which carseat is compartable. Graco snugride fits more strollers unlike the Chicco.

I've found that graco actually fits more strollers then chicco. BOB is one example that doesn't fit a chicco in their infant seat adapter but does a graco.
I should have said, the stroller my husband wants won't fit the Graco and he's pretty adamant on getting a 3 wheel. I had to talk him down off the BOB lol...I can't justify that kind of cost!! I do think it's easier to figure out the stroller first as not every car seat adapts. It's definitely a process!!

We want a jogging stroller instead of a bulky "travel system" and we found this one and like that it has the car seat and jogging stroller in a travel system. We are going with this:

This is what we bought after doing a bunch of research. The car seat is pretty highly rated and was the best option for us all around.
ETA: Also, after shopping around, Walmart had the best price by far, and delivered it super quick!
