Very bad diaper rash - please help

My 3 week old has a very bad diaper rash. It is so red and raw. Any advice or remedies that you have tried and has worked? I am using Bordeaux butt paste, pampers diapers and sensitive wipes in the hopes that it helps.

Thanks so much!

  • When DD had it, I've tried every single brand you can buy. Then our pedi gave me a prescription cream with antiobiotics, and within 2 days the rash was all gone.If all fails, I'd ask your pedi.

Also,I recommend WaterWipes. It's not cheap, but it's the best!

  • DS had a severe rash and the pedi instructed us not to use wipes.  We used a warm washcloth for wiping, and Desitin and it went away.

  • Try a different brand of diaper and wipes...  With DD she had a horrible reaction to Pampers (had a niece that the same thing happened but with Huggies instead)...  Her poor butt (and wherever a wet diaper touched) was SO raw it wasn't funny, but only when she had a Pampers diaper on...  DS is fine with whatever brand of diaper, so it doesn't happen for every baby but it is pretty common for some babies to have a reaction to something with the diaper/wipe (anything pampers and DD would break out...)

Another product to try is Triple Paste...  An aunt who had a special needs child who was in diapers his whole life rec'd this to us - the stuff works great and cleared up any diaper rash we encountered within a diaper or two...

  • We dealt with this too. I used water and washcloth to wipe for a few days, making sure to pat dry after (keeping the area completely dry is key!) I used desitin maximum strength for a few days--the smell is unpleasant but it works; we had triEd butt paste, triple paste, etc and they did not work. Also, I left ds without a diaper, swaddled in a towel for about 20 minutes twice a day. Letting the area get fresh air really seemed to help. In fact I still give hima out 20 minutes a day without diaper, on a pad or towel so he doesn't soil things. Now that the rash is gone I still pat dry before putting on a new diaper and apply Vaseline which really helps protect him.

  • As PP said, keeping the area dry is really important.  What seemed to cure my DS's diaper rash was a soak in a warm bath and then being thoroughly dried off and not putting a diaper on for a little while, then I slathered on lots of Aquaphor.  I kept putting on either Aquaphor or A & D ointment at every diaper change and it hasn't come back.  It seems like ointments helped him better than creams like Desitin or Butt Paste.  When I run out of the A & D I will probably just use petroleum jelly (cheaper).

I would also recommend calling your pedi if you can't get it cleared up by trying anything people have mentioned.

Our pedi has us using a layer of hydrocortisone cream, layer of lotrimin, and then sealing it in with a layer Of normal rash cream (he suggested triple paste so that's what we're using). DD has a horrid rash with little eroded areas along her butt crack. Poor thing. If she didn't poop 84953 times a day she wouldn't have it.

  • I understand your frustration! I'd call your pedi to make sure it isn't yeasty. My LO had a bad diaper rash and excoriation about a month ago. Try not to use wipes for awhile, as they can irritate their skin. Just use a wet, warm washcloth to clean. We also used a hair dryer (using cool blast setting so we didn't burn him) to quickly air dry his bottom. You can also try dabbing baby's bottom with some Maalox or Mylanta (not the mint flavored, it will sting). The anatacid effect should help with the acidity from the poop and urine. And then apply A & D ointment. This is what pedi suggested to us. Ours got so bad that we had to get a prescribed ointment of Aquapho.r & Questran. That is what ultimately cleared up the excoriation. I also now put Triple Paste on him with every diaper change. Good luck!

  • My son got bad diaper rashes and straight zinc cream with a layer of Vaseline on top worked wonders. You can find the zinc where all the other diaper rash creams are.

  • This happened with ds#2 at approximately the same age. What worked for us was changing his diaper more frequently (I was actually going through about 20 diapers a day!) and using a clean cloth soaked in hot water to clean him (pat don't rub). Take another clean cloth and pat him dry and then reapply the butt paste REALLY thickly. Repeat. The wipes were irritating him badly and we used the same ones as you. Now that the rash is gone (it took maybe five days before it was completely gone) we are back to wipes without an issue.  If you find that the rash won't clear up no matter what and doesn't seem to be getting any better, you should call the pedi because it could be a yeast infection and would need antibiotics. GL!
  • air is the best! sooo the longer you can keep him out of a diaper the better even if its just ten minutes here and there after a diaper change, this also helps with the wipes..since they make the skin wet and if you put the next diaper on while his skin is wet will only make matters worse. Also we use Burt bees diaper cream its kinda hard to find for some reason...they sell the line everywhere but I can never seem to find the diaper cream but you can def get it online..like amazon or diapers.com etc. Also we use seventh generation wipes...not sure if any of this helps but good luck and if it doesnt clear up in a day or two def all the pedi!"o)
  • Go to your local pharmacy and ask if they carry calmoseptine. It is an over the counter paste that is basically used to treat bed sores, etc., and it is amazing. Whenever my kids had awful awful rashes I would use some. It's expensive ($20 I think for a little jar) but it lasted a long time since I only used it when they got really bad rashes.

  • Breast milk!!!!! My ds has a bad rash that nothing would clear up. I started using breast milk on it yesterday and it is almost gone. The stuff is magical!!!
  • We do a few things including:

1- Changing diapers a LOT- more frequently probably than needed

2- naked time. LO loves this! I pile up some towels by a sunny window and give her diaper free time every day- it's good 'play' time for her as well.

3- sensitive skin wipes and occasionally a break from those using warm washcloths instead.

4- we dry her but with a hair dryer. I know (she's spoiled), but she loves this- if she's crying the warmth and sound chill her out. We keep the dryer far enough away to ensure it's not too hot, but this is great for ensuring a really dry baby and that helps with the rash.

5- when she needs diaper cr?me I pat on a little burts bee's.

  • Nix the wipes and use warm washcloths for sure. I use Butt Paste and it works better for my LO than anything else, but if it doesn't work for you try Desitin or Penaten. Change as often as you can. Most importantly give LO's bum some air time! Make sure it's dry before you diaper, too.

  • The butt paste didn't work for us. Our pedi suggested triple paste. We also figured out that the formula we were using was giving DS diarrhea so we switched and it went away.
