New NICU Moms Come In!

Hi Ladies,

It's been a while since I've seen someone post this info so I thought I'd be the one to remind you all...

If you have a little one in the NICU and are pumping then contact your insurance company about coverage for the cost of the pump.  Often they will cover the cost of a rented hosptial grade pump for the duration of the time your little one is in the NICU.  This saved me about $300.

And I definately recomend the hospital grade pump, especially if you are just starting out with the pumping.  These hoptial grade pumps are the best to maximise your pumping potential and get things started quickly.

HTH!  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the info. ?DD was born at 34 weeks and is still in NICU. ?Her breathing has been quite fast due to RDS. ?She has been off CPAP for a few days and is doing well on her own. ?She has a feeding tube that they've been feeding her with my breastmilk. ?I finally got to hold her for the first time this morning and it was amazing. ?They've allowed me to stay in the hospital but I'm sure tonight is my last night. ?The staff has been wonderful and has made me feel as comfortable as possible. ?It is hard though and I do want to break down and cry sometimes but I do know she will be ok and will pull through fine but its hard seeing her all hooked up to different tubes etc.?

  • I'm so sorry that you are all having to go through this.  Hopefully she will be healthy and tube free very soon.  You will be amazed at how quickly they just "get the hang" of this breathing/eating thing.  Hang in there.  I hope that your insurance company can reimburse you any money you've had to pay for a rented pump.
  • Each insurance company is a little different.  Mine would pay, once I reached my $250 deductible.  They would alos only pay for the rental, no consumables - like the cups, tubing, containers, pads, cream, etc.

Also, you may need pre-authorization AND you may need to go to a medical supply store they want.  All of this will help you through the insurance maze and haze!

Happy pumping!  While Laura was in the nicu, pumping for her made me feel in control of the situation, like I was doing something for her, since there was so little else I could do while I was stuck at home, waiting for a ride to the hospital.
